The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute is celebrating World Oceans Day with a number of events, including film screenings, educational activities, and talks to raise ocean awareness and protection.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] is making a big splash and celebrating World Oceans Day with a variety of community events this weekend! Festivities kick off Friday evening with a “Surf & Support” fundraising event, followed by a free open house on Saturday in partnership with Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation and Keep Bermuda Beautiful, a free matinee film on Sunday and BUEI Talks in partnership with the Bermuda National Trust on Monday evening.

“Join BUEI at 6:30pm on Friday, June 6th for “The Endless Summer”. This 1966 classic showcases stunning locations around the world and thrilling pursuits of the perfect wave. The evening starts with an introduction by local surf expert Ian “Cheesy” Bridges and concludes with a panel discussion featuring members of Bermuda’s surfing community. Tickets are $35 on BUEI.bm and include a signature “Honey Deuce” cocktail, sponsored by Burrows & Lightbourn, and a snack pack for the film. Proceeds support BUEI’s ocean literacy, environmental education and visitor experience programmes.

“On Saturday, June 7th, BUEI’s doors will be open to the public free of charge for our annual World Oceans Day Open House from 10am to 3pm. We are collaborating with Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation and Keep Bermuda Beautiful to offer activities that are fun for all ages! The day includes complimentary admission to BUEI’s Ocean Discovery Centre, I-Spy scavenger hunt, plastic art workshops, interactive marine science education activities, ocean-themed short films, book readings and entertainment. Food vendors will be on site and there is ample parking available.

““Chasing Coral”, a film documenting the most sever coral bleaching event in recorded history, will be shown at BUEI at 3pm on Sunday, June 8th, which is World Oceans Day. This free matinee highlights the urgent need to address environmental issues affecting our oceans. Space is limited and you can RSVP on BUEI’s website to secure your seat.

“BUEI’s World Ocean Day weekend of activities will conclude at 6pm on Monday, June 9th with the recently sold out BUEI Talk in partnership with the Bermuda National Trust. This illustrated talk by bestselling author Hampton Sides re-explores the life and death of Captain James Cook, one of Britain’s greatest navigators. The talk, which is based on Sides’ book “The Wide Wide Sea” and includes a vivid slideshow, documents Cook’s epic final voyage around the world while deconstructing the complex circumstances that led to his dramatic death.

“Let’s all do our part to help the ocean around Bermuda become more widely understood, appreciated and protected! Go to BUEI.bm/EVENTS to sign-up today.”
