KPMG Announces 2025 Scholarship Recipients

KPMG in Bermuda has awarded scholarships to Deidre Smith, Kiara Burcher, and Taj Lowery to support their studies in accounting and insurance.

A spokesperson said, “KPMG in Bermuda is pleased to announce the recipients of their 2025 scholarship awards. These scholarships support Bermudian students who are pursuing degrees in fields related to accounting and insurance, with a clear interest in financial services.

“The KPMG Scholarship, valued at $30,000 per annum, has been awarded to Deidre Smith. The Captive Scholarship, also valued at up to $30,000 per annum, has been awarded to Kiara Burcher and Taj Lowery.

“Each scholarship includes not only financial support for the duration of their degree but also access to KPMG’s Lift Off Program, which offers mentoring, summer internships, and support toward professional qualifications such as the CPA Canada, CPA US, ACA, and ACCA. Recipients are also given the opportunity to take part in KPMG’s Global Advantage Program, a four-day leadership program at one of its global offices.”

Ms Smith shared her enthusiasm for what lies ahead, “I am incredibly grateful and honored to have been awarded the 2025 KPMG Scholarship. The opportunity for mentorship and summer internships will provide invaluable guidance as I explore the industry and get to know the firm. After graduation, I aspire to work in accounting, where I can make a meaningful and ethical contribution to organizations and communities.”

Felicia Wilsen, Partner and Lift Off Program Chair at KPMG in Bermuda, highlighted the firm’s focus on nurturing the next generation of Bermudian talent, “These scholarships reflect our commitment to investing in Bermuda’s future. We are proud to support talented young Bermudians who are not only academically driven but also eager to make a difference in the financial services industry.”

The spokesperson said, “The Captive Scholarship, established in collaboration with the Bermuda Captive Network, is specifically designed for students interested in the captive insurance sector. In addition to funding, recipients rotate through KPMG’s Audit, Tax, and Advisory departments and gain practical experience through secondments at a captive insurance company. Scholars also receive access to industry events, including the Bermuda Captive Conference, and are supported by a career coach and performance manager.”

Ms Burcher reflected on the opportunity, “I am eternally grateful for this scholarship because not only does it allow me to pursue my academic goals, but I am joining a company whose values I agree with. I am excited to start my actuarial journey through consulting as it will allow me to get a diverse portfolio of insurance companies and a well-rounded understanding of the captive insurance industry.”

Mr Lowery spoke to the long-term impact of the award, “This experience will not only enhance my academic journey but also provide strategic insight, industry access, and long-term relationships essential to navigating and leading in the dynamic world of insurance and risk management. I am grateful for the trust and investment this scholarship represents, and I am committed to paying it forward through impactful work that strengthens Bermuda’s future.”

Bron Turner, Partner and Sector Lead for Captives at KPMG in Bermuda, also emphasized the importance of cultivating future talent, particularly in the insurance sector, “Captive insurance plays a critical role in Bermuda’s economy and global reputation. We are excited to support students who are curious, committed, and ready to explore the dynamic world of captive insurance and ensure they are well prepared to contribute to Bermuda’s leadership in global insurance. As a firm dedicated to supporting our island’s communities, we believe investing in young talent is key to sustaining that leadership for generations to come.”

Grainne Richmond, Chair, Bermuda Captive Network, said, “The Captive Scholarship was created to encourage young Bermudians to explore careers in captive insurance. It’s exciting to see students taking this opportunity and showing real interest in a sector that is so important to Bermuda.
