The Ministry of Public Works and Environment is reminding commercial and recreational fishers that Bermuda’s annual seasonal fishing closure for the Seasonally Protected Areas will take effect on 15 April 2026.

A Government spokesperson said, “From 15 April through 14 August 2026, fishing will be prohibited in the designated areas known as the “Hind Grounds” and “Grouper Grounds”.

“The closure is intended to protect Red Hind and Black Grouper during their spawning period, when these species are particularly vulnerable.

“This annual measure forms part of Bermuda’s fisheries management efforts to help protect important reef fish stocks and support the long-term health of the marine environment.

“Fishers are further advised that although the Seasonally Protected Areas will reopen on 15 August 2026, the Extended Closure Areas around key Black Grouper aggregation sites will remain closed until 1 December 2026.

“Members of the public are encouraged to review the relevant closure maps and ensure they are familiar with the restricted areas before fishing.

“For more information, contact the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Marine Resources Section, at 293-5600 or fisheries@gov.bm.”
