Government Aim To Create Affordable Housing Units

In providing an update on housing initiatives earlier this month, Minister of Housing and Municipalities Zane DeSilva had mentioned some of the plans to create affordable housing saying that “The goal of Phase One is to deliver approximately 310 affordable housing units, including emergency and supported housing, through a combination of new construction and the activation of existing underutilised homes

Speaking at that time he said, “The initial stage of Phase One is expected to deliver over 200 affordable homes across five sites, including housing for families and seniors:

  • Victoria Place, Sandys – 36 affordable units
  • Albert Row, Sandys – 24 affordable units
  • Tommy Fox Road, St. David’s – 24 affordable units
  • Dr. Cann Park II, Southampton – 110 seniors’ units
  • Channel House, St. David’s – refitted to provide 30 to 50 rooms for senior residents

The government is currently running a consultation on the Bermuda Affordable Housing Strategy 2025–2035, saying “This consultation draft sets out a comprehensive, ten-year framework to address Bermuda’s growing housing challenges, including rising costs, limited supply, and increasing demand across all income levels.

  1. Rubbish says:

10 year framework consultation…. here we go again. Was supposed to be three years…now this nonsense and a consultation.

Failing PLP at their promises to promise ,,,fix the road or resign.

  2. Joe Bloggs says:

    Dear Minister DeSilva,

Please may I see where the $100 million odd for this development is coming from?

    • Joe? says:

Are you an accountant? Why do you have to see it? Stop wasting time.

  3. jock says:

wow, so ugly – no attempt at all to apply Bermuda style

    • We have to be frugal or says:

Raise your taxes. Get real. There is no time for embellishment. If they did have all of the bda features you would be the first to say it was time consuming and costly. Make up your mind.

      • Hmmm says:

PLP are out in force trying to shoot down any criticsm , or genuine concerns

  4. Watching says:

    Here come the objectors!
    We need housing but…

    • Hmmm says:

How much Greenspace has been included for 24 families? where is the water catch ?

      • Where is God? says:

Another delay tactic. They are not building your Lego house. They know the key features.

        • Hmmm says:

Are these intended for the influx of people from Caricom depressing wages and taking job opportunities from Bermudians?

    • Joe Bloggs says:

“We need housing but…” since private developers do not see any financial benefit in building such things, our Government with no understanding of economics or business should build more “low-cost” housing at $1 million plus per unit.

The fact that we have fewer people living in Bermuda now than we did in 2006 should not affect the PLP Government’s thinking.

      • watching says:

Regardless who has left Bermuda, there is still a responsibility to house those that are here.

These homes I am sure will be suitable and in most instances better than the ones they are living in currently.

Oftentimes those that are blocking all development don’t really care as they have their homes and their lives are just peachy.

        • Joe Bloggs says:

I understand. You believe that Government should give million dollar homes to everyone. I disagree with that view.

        • Well said says:

Amen. My experience as well. I agree with you.

        • Bermydude says:

          Obviously your miss informed!!

As per many of the Minister’s statements prior, he said. The Government would build 194 units in 4 different sites and in various confirmations, 1,2,3 bedrooms and the costs are turn key!!

          Please inform yourself first

      • Yes few people says:

Which makes you think more units should be available but not so. In many instances probate has slowed things down. Family disputes are leading to inhabitants properties deteriorating. Joe, you got a left side of the brain or you keep hoping one day to hit the target?

        • Joe Bloggs says:

Many former apartments are now air b n b. The PLP Government allowed those apartments to be removed from the market

  5. Garry says:

    Depressing, prison like blocks.

Do we actually have a planning sign off any more?

Needing more housing is no reason to build this crap.

    • Crap? says:

Once again you jump to conclusions. When Noah was building the ark, you were the first to ask “you expect me to board this crap?”

      • Hmmm says:

WOW, do you really think two of every creature went aboard a big boat built by a man?

How many creatures do you think exist on this planet?

How many creatures existed in the location of the Ark?

How did all the other pairs from around the world get to the ark?

Did only the first two ants get on board?

Only 8 humans on the Ark , Noah and his family.

  6. Steve says:

    Another friends & family project

    • Really? says:

      What is your proof,cousin?
Bet you will be 1st in line to apply.

  7. Bermydude says:

    Obviously your miss informed!!

  8. Hmmm says:

There are over 500 Air BnB properties in Bermuda !

That is crazy… As soon as Southampton Princess opens, PLP need to ban Air BnB type investment properties.

our hosing stock is needed by Bermudians. We need to stop the Bermudian Greed by the few destroying Bermuda for us all.

    • iyiyi says:

You are so wrong , Many insincere Bermudian tenants created this issue in the first place .

      • Hmmm says:

No it’s is greed. End of your greed and renters greed. You can only fix one, yours.

  9. Triangle Drifter says:

Dione Warwick’s tune Promises Promises is in the back of my mind.

More PLP Promises with no delivery. Their voters love these accomplishments.

  10. Leo smith says:

What is considered affordable? Someone who is making $800 a week as a single parent may find $1800 not affordable. Someone whose family dynamics may dictate what is affordable. So we really need to develop a formulae to help those who make a certain amount per month that is affordable to them.
