May marks World Stroke Month – a time to raise awareness, share hope, and take action for stroke survivors and their families around the globe. Here in Bermuda, our commitment is stronger than ever, as we continue the legacy and vital work of the Bermuda Stroke Association, now proudly recognized as registered charity #361.

In Bermuda, we see an average of 4 to 5 new stroke cases every week, adding up to approximately 250 people affected by stroke each year. These numbers underscore the urgent need for a year-round focus on both prevention and rehabilitation, ensuring that our community receives the support and care it needs.

Stroke can strike anyone, but certain risk factors make it more likely. High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, atrial fibrillation, and a sedentary lifestyle are among the most significant contributors. The good news is that many strokes are preventable. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, routine medical checkups, and managing chronic conditions can dramatically reduce your risk.

The impact of stroke touches many lives in our community. Through education, advocacy, and hands-on support, our association strives to ensure that survivors and caregivers never feel alone on this journey. This year, we are excited to expand our support groups and outreach. Stay tuned for a calendar full of opportunities: support group meetings, beach days, and special events designed to empower survivors, foster friendships, and offer practical advice to caregivers. Our mission is clear to build a supportive network where everyone affected by stroke can find resources, encouragement, and a welcoming community.

You are not alone in this journey. We invite you to join us, whether you are a survivor, caregiver, or someone who wants to make a difference. Together, we can break the silence around stroke, celebrate resilience, and create brighter futures for all. Visit the website for further information.

For updates and event details, follow our social media channels and keep an eye on local news. Let’s keep this focus and momentum going all year long, making support and awareness for stroke survivors and caregivers a priority every month.
