Theatre Boycott Anniversary Celebration Event
A celebration will take place at Speciality Cinema on June 16 to mark the anniversary of the Theatre Boycott.
A spokesperson said, “In the spirit of our Heros’ Weekend, a collaborative effort of community stakeholders is staging a celebration of the anniversary of the lift off of the Theatre Boycott on Tuesday, June 16 from 12.00pm to 1.00pm at the Speciality Cinema.
“This free event – food will be available at cost, of course – will include a skit and brief presentations by a few of our young people from public and private schools. In addition, there will be clips from the award-winning movie about the Boycott, entitled ‘When Voices Rise.’
“There will also be two short videos reflecting on the Boycott; one produced by a female and another by a male high school student.
“A few of the surviving pioneers who engaged in that heroic campaign – which transformed Bermuda into the island we all freely enjoy – will also be in attendance.
“This collaboration includes Bermuda Is Love, Chewstick Foundation, Department of Education, Imagine Bermuda, and PTB; this reflects the spirit of the Bermudian legacy of rallying, which brought the Theatre Boycott’s success.
“That spirit has also led to the co-owners of Speciality Cinema – Shandon and Giovanna Easton – to offer their cinema, free of charge, for the celebration of this anniversary.
“The community is welcome to this event, from noon to 1.00pm on Tuesday – following the National Heroes’ Day, not only to offer gratitude to those ordinary heroes who played their part in our shared history, but also to draw lessons for current circumstances.”
