Foundation Provides 1,700 Healthy Meals
The Stephen Lee Helping Hands Foundation has provided more than 1,700 healthy meals to students, has now received official charitable status and is preparing to expand its reach across the island.
A spokesperson said, “This school year, The Stephen Lee Helping Hands Foundation has provided over 1,700 healthy meals to students through its Healthy Meals Program. After four years of quietly serving Bermuda’s youth, the Foundation has now received official charitable status and is preparing to expand its reach across the island. “Founded by professional bodybuilder, health coach, personal trainer, and nutritionist Hafid James, the Foundation was created from a simple belief: no child should struggle to learn because they are hungry or lacking proper nutrition.”
“Receiving charitable status is an exciting milestone because it allows us to grow,” Mr. James said. “Our goal is to expand our Healthy Meals Program beyond Dellwood Middle School into other schools. We’re also preparing to launch our Literacy Through Athletics Program at The Berkeley Institute, where student-athletes will learn how nutrition, exercise, and education work together to build healthier, happier lives. We want to give them incentives to focus on their academics and help with their literacy while improving their health, two major issues in Bermuda”

For Mr James, the Foundation is about much more than providing meals.
He said. “I’m thinking about these children today, but I’m also thinking about the adults they’ll become. How can we expect a child to concentrate in class when they’re hungry or not getting the nutrients their brain and body need? Nutrition isn’t just about preventing hunger—it’s about giving children the opportunity to learn, develop, and reach their full potential.
“There is a proliferation of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even cognitive issues. Many of these conditions are appearing at younger ages. While there can be other contributing factors, lifestyle—especially nutrition—plays a major role. The habits and mindsets we develop as children often stay with us for life.
“Healthier food is often more expensive, and many lower-income households simply don’t have easy access. We want to help change both access and knowledge.”
The spokesperson said, “Through his work at For Health and Happiness, James has spent years helping adults improve their health through better nutrition, exercise, and mindset. He wants young people to build those habits early. The Healthy Meals Program doesn’t just provide meals—it provides meals focused on whole foods and the balanced plate concept, with no added sugars, trans fats, or foods high on the glycemic index.”
Mr. James said, “I work with adults who are trying to reverse Type 2 diabetes, lower cholesterol, lose weight, build muscle, or improve their quality of life. Imagine if we could help someone build healthy habits at 13 instead of 43. Think of the opportunities they’ll have.
“We want student-athletes to understand that health isn’t just about looking fit. It’s about having the energy to learn, the confidence to pursue your goals, and the knowledge to make decisions that will improve your life for years to come. You don’t need creatine, the latest fat burner, or the newest energy drink to build a healthier, stronger body.”
As the Foundation prepares for its next chapter, Mr James is quick to acknowledge that none of it would be possible without community support.
Mr. James said, “Charities don’t succeed because of one person—they succeed because communities believe in the mission. Every sponsor, donor, volunteer, and supporter becomes part of changing a child’s future.”
Dwayne A. Caines said, “On behalf of the Corporation of Hamilton, I am pleased to offer our wholehearted support for the Stephen Lee Helping Hands Foundation and the important work it is doing to improve the lives of Bermuda’s children.
“We recognize that proper nutrition is one of the essential foundations of a healthy mind, body, and spirit. A child who has access to nutritious, balanced meals is better equipped to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. The Foundation’s commitment to ensuring that no child has to learn on an empty stomach addresses a genuine need within our community and reflects a vision that deserves recognition and support.
“The Corporation of Hamilton has had the privilege of supporting the Foundation during its formative years and has watched it grow into a respected registered charity with a clear purpose and a meaningful mission. Achieving charitable status is an important milestone and reflects the dedication, passion, and perseverance of Hafid James and his team.”
The Ark Bermuda Charity Committee said, “On behalf of the Ark Bermuda Charity Committee, we are incredibly proud to support The Stephen Lee Helping Hands Foundation and congratulate Hafid and the team on achieving charitable status. This milestone is a testament to the Foundation’s dedication to improving the lives of young people in Bermuda. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and initiatives like the Healthy Meals Program and Literacy Through Athletics are making a meaningful difference by supporting students’ wellbeing, education, and future success. We look forward to continuing our partnership and seeing the Foundation expand its impact across our community.”
Looking ahead, Mr James hopes the Foundation becomes more than a charity—but a catalyst for healthier communities across Bermuda.
He said, “Bermuda has always shown that when people come together, incredible things happen. My hope is that we grow—providing nutritious meals and helping young people gain the knowledge and tools to build healthier futures. If we help even one generation make better choices, the impact will last far beyond the classroom.”

Well done brother!!
