Women Urged To Book Regular Mammograms
Health Minister Kim Wilson is urging women across Bermuda to prioritise breast health and attend regular mammography screenings as the island observes National Mammography Day on October 16 and Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Minister of Health Kim Wilson said, “October 16 is National Mammography Day, and I encourage all women in Bermuda to make their breast health a priority by scheduling and attending regular mammography screenings.
“As we continue to observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are reminded that breast cancer remains one of the most significant health challenges facing women. Early detection remains our strongest defence. Regular mammograms can identify changes in breast tissue long before symptoms appear, increasing treatment options and improving outcomes. National Mammography Day is observed annually to raise awareness of the vital role mammograms play in detecting breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages.
“In Bermuda, breast cancer continues to be the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women. This reality underscores the importance of routine screening, self-awareness, and timely medical consultation when concerns arise. Evidence shows that mammograms can detect abnormalities years before they may be felt during a self-examination, making regular screening an essential component of preventive healthcare.
“I particularly encourage women aged 40 and over to speak with their healthcare providers about maintaining regular screening schedules. However, breast health is important at every age. Knowing your family history, performing regular self-checks, and seeking medical advice when something does not seem right are all important steps that can save lives.
“I also want to acknowledge those who are currently undergoing treatment, those who have survived breast cancer, and the families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and advocates who support them every day. Your courage, resilience, and commitment inspire us all.
“The Ministry of Health remains committed to promoting awareness, encouraging screening, and supporting initiatives that improve cancer prevention, early detection, and access to quality care. Together, we can continue to reduce the impact of breast cancer in our community and ensure that more women have the opportunity to live healthy, fulfilling lives.
“On this National Mammography Day, let us all take action. If you are due for a mammogram, make the appointment. If you know someone who has been postponing a screening, encourage them to book it. Early detection saves lives, and a simple screening could make all the difference.”
