Photos: Spanish Point Family Reunion Held

The Spanish Point Family Reunion Re-Do recently brought former and current residents together to reconnect, celebrate shared memories and strengthen community ties.

A spokesperson said, “Sometimes, bringing a community together does not require a committee, a complicated programme or months of planning. Sometimes, it takes a good idea, a few willing friends and a place that still feels like home.

“That was the spirit behind the Spanish Point Family Reunion Re-Do, held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Admiralty House Park, where former and current residents gathered to reconnect with neighbours, relatives, childhood friends and the community that helped shape their lives.

“The reunion was inspired by Spanish Point Tales, a book written by Gina E. E. Davis, whose reflections on growing up in the neighbourhood brought back memories for generations of Spanish Point families.

“But the connection between Davis and fellow organiser Angela Fubler began with an unexpected discovery.

“After purchasing the book, Fubler recognised her grandmother, Genevieve Hollis, standing outside the neighbourhood corner store she had owned in Spanish Point. It was only then that Davis became aware of the connection between the families’ histories.

“For Fubler, an entrepreneur and founder of Chatmore British International School, the photograph represented more than a familiar face. It recalled the entrepreneurial spirit that had long been part of her family and the neighbourhood.

“Her ancestor, Mrs Charlotte Wood Oates, operated a laundry at Bosses Cove, while her grandmother’s corner store served the Spanish Point community. Entrepreneurship continued through subsequent generations, with most of Fubler’s cousins also becoming business owners.

“The discovery reflected something familiar about older Bermuda neighbourhoods: families, businesses, schools and community relationships were closely connected, often across generations.

“From a Book to a Reunion

“Davis, daughter of the late broadcaster Everard Davis, grew up in Spanish Point and has long treasured the people, places and experiences that shaped her childhood.

“After writing Spanish Point Tales, she began thinking about how she might bring the community together. She knew what she wanted to achieve but was unsure how to make it happen.

“That was when she spoke with Fubler.

“‘It’s easy,’ Fubler responded.

“Her suggestion was straightforward: invite everyone to Admiralty House Park for a good, old-fashioned community picnic. Families could bring their own chairs, food, photographs and whatever else they needed, while the organisers provided music and an opportunity to reconnect.

“Fubler also suggested involving her friend Jenita Dyer, owner of Lemon & Ginger, whose colourful concessions hut operates at Admiralty House Park.

“As it turned out, Davis already knew George Dyer from her childhood days in Spanish Point, but she had never met Jenita. Angela’s introduction created yet another connection between people whose lives were linked to the same community.

“Although the two women became connected through the reunion preparations, Gina and Jenita did not meet face-to-face until August, when the original event was scheduled to take place.

“It was a fitting example of what the organisers hoped the reunion would achieve: reconnecting people who had shared a neighbourhood, sometimes without even realising how closely their stories were intertwined.

“And just like that, the Spanish Point Family Reunion began taking shape.

“The reunion was originally scheduled for August 22, but thunderstorms and lightning forced the organisers to postpone the gathering in the interest of public safety.

“The cancellation was particularly disappointing because some former residents had travelled from overseas specifically to attend and although they showed up and met Gina and Jenita they were unable to share in the full experience.

“However, the postponement created an unexpected opportunity.

“With the new date immediately set for October 24, the organisers were able to expand the experience, arrange additional food vendors and introduce a range of Spanish Point-themed T-shirts celebrating neighbourhood identity.

“The shirts, designed by Davis’s sister, proved particularly popular, with messages including My Family Is From Out Point, Spanish Point – Hooked on Home and Point People – Connected by Memories.

The spokesperson said, “During the reunion, she interviewed several guests and began collecting personal recollections that could become part of Spanish Point Tales: Volume Two.

“She is encouraging anyone with an interesting Spanish Point story, historical photographs, family memorabilia or memories of their childhood ‘crew’ to make contact through the Spanish Point Family Reunion WhatsApp channel.

“Whether the stories are about growing up near the Pontoons, fishing traditions, neighbourhood shops, childhood adventures, school friendships or the families who made Spanish Point home, Davis hopes to preserve the memories for future generations.

“Have a Spanish Point memory to share? Residents, former residents and their families can join the Spanish Point Family Reunion WhatsApp Channel to share memories and photographs, receive community updates and contribute stories for consideration in the proposed second volume of Spanish Point Tales.”
