Sandys Win Middle School Track & Field Champs

The Bermuda middle school track and field finals were held at National Stadium today [ Mar 24] and saw a domination from the west end. Sandys Secondary Middle School claimed title after title, and ended up cinching the overall school trophy.

With strong school pride on show, good sportsmanship and deafening cheers to be heard, the event was well attended and enjoyed by all.

Sandys also won both the male and female team titles, with Whitney Institute in second place in both divisions. BHS claimed third in the female division, with Warwick Academy placing 3rd in the male.

Jaz Ratteray Smith [pictured below] from Sandys Secondary Middle School is an all round athlete who appears destined to go far. He has played football for Somerset Trojans and BFA National Academy, and participated in numerous track and road running events. Despite his young age, he has already competed abroad in track and field.

Obviously having made the trek from the West End with victory in mind, the Sandys Middle School Drumline corp provided well timed sound effects through the presentation, and took to the field immediately after the announcement of their school’s victory. Video below:

    I guess my Saltus / Bermuda *Discus* record still stands that I set in 1965 when I threw the discus 152 ft when I was only 15 yrs old!!! It is the “oldest” track and field record at the school and obviously in the Island!! It will be 50 yrs old next year!!

    Don’t believe me – then call the SGS sports people and ask about Bruce McClarron’s Discus record!!
