Volcano: British Airways Flights Remain Grounded
Flights in and out of Bermuda to the UK on British Airways remain grounded today [Apr 16], due to the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull. The decision to cancel all UK flights was been made for safety reasons, As volcanic ash is drifting over the UK.
Numerous airports across the UK and Europe have cancelled flights, stranding literally millions of passengers. With the volcano still spewing smoke into the atmosphere, some experts predict the chaos could continue, saying that the “cancellations have already caused the greatest mayhem to air travel since the Second World War.”
The local British Airways office responded swiftly yesterday, issuing timely updates and opening their office at the airport to accommodate those who may have been unable to get through on the phone. They have also opened the ticket office at the L.F. Wade International again today [Apr 16] from 1.30 pm to 6 pm for the same reason.
There is no word yet whether the travel plans of the 20 strong tourism delegation [which includes Premier Dr Ewart Brown] who are presently in London has been affected.
Popular flight tracking website Flightradar24.com has crashed under the traffic load, and remains down as of this writing.
For a period yesterday the eruption and accompanying ash cloud became a meme on popular social network Twitter, with “Dear Iceland, we said send cash, not ash” being widely tweeted.
