Fatal Accident: 3 Yr Old Child Drowns

June 27, 2010

ferry reach june 2010In what is nothing short of a severe tragedy, a 3 year old boy passed away today [June 27] following an incident at Ferry Reach. The Police have confirmed this very sad news, and are withholding the name pending notification. Another child involved in the incident, a 2 year old boy whom we understand to be a friend of the older boy, is presently in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital where he will be kept for observation.

A bystander tells us that two children were swimming before powerboating was due to start. They apparently encountered difficulty and were pulled from the water, and staff from the St John’s Ambulance Brigade worked on resuscitating them. Both children were rushed to King Edward Memorial Hospital by the St John’s Ambulance, with one of the children tragically succumbing to his injuries. In something that will surprise no one, we are told that bystanders were all extremely upset, many in tears.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said the children went swimming and “were noticed unresponsive in the water”. Officers from the Marine Unit and Eastern CID attended the scene.

Bernews joins with the wider Bermudian community in extending our sincere sympathies to this child’s friends, family and especially his parents.

The official Police statement follows below:

At 1:30pm on Sunday police received a report of two boys, aged 2 and 3 years old having been pulled from the water at Kindley Field Rd St Georges, near to the BAS kitchen. Attempts were made to resuscitate both children at the scene by an off duty EMT, and then both were rushed to KEMH by St Johns Ambulance where the 3 year old boy died as a result of his injuries and the 2 year old is currently in ICU.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this tragic incident to contact police on 2950011. Police are also appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this tragic incident or anyone who may have captured the incident on any recording device e.g. camcorder or cellular device to contact Police on 295-0011.

[Editors note: An earlier version of this story had the ages of the children transposed in the Police statement, it has been amended as per the latest Police notification]
