Lister: Colonialism No Place In Today’s World

June 6, 2010

Following a visit with the visiting Caribbean Heads of Government, PLP MP Walter Lister said “I encouraged the delegates not to remain Overseas Territories but to prepare themselves and their people to assume their rightful position among the other nations of the world. Colonialism is a hold over from a previous century which really has no place in today’s world.” This echoes the statement made by Premier Dr Ewart Brown the night before, when at a dinner he proposed a toast “to the people of the overseas territories – not to be known forever as territories.”

The Government Heads included representatives of the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla and Montserrat.

Walter Lister and Dr. Edward Harris treated the visiting Caribbean Heads of Government to a tour of one of Bermuda’s most notable historical sites – Commissioner’s House at the Royal Naval Dockyard.

Upon their arrival yesterday [June 5] Dr. Harris, National Museum of Bermuda Executive Director, gave the delegation a guided tour of the building’s many artefacts and exhibits including Graham Foster’s magnificent 1,000-square foot mural illustrating Bermuda’s entire human history from the 1500’s to today. The delegration is pictured below standing in front of the mural.

The delegation was also provided with a historical account by Dr. Harris of the design and building of the limestone structure and the links between Bermuda and the West Indies. Following the tour Mr. Lister invited the special guests for lunch where fellow MPs Dennis Lister and Terry Lister welcomed the group to enjoy the cultural heritage on offer at Commissioner’s House. Mr. Lister also told the delegates of the significant contribution made by the Caribbean peoples to the development of Dockyard and the many people from various Caribbean nations who continued to make this a unique landmark heritage location.

Hehehehe… more qlq doublespeak from the culturally (and mentally) bereft leaders of this insignificant pebble in the middle of the Atlantic called Bermuda.

In breath Walter Lister says… “Colonialism is a hold over from a previous century which really has no place in today’s world.”

So then he and Dr. Edward Harris promptly treated the visiting Caribbean Heads of Government to a tour of one of Bermuda’s most notable historical sites – Commissioner’s House at the Royal Naval Dockyard.

Can anyone else – apart from me – see the irony in this?

If you seriously want to sever ties with colonial links then raze the Commissioner’s House to the ground (along with those cement silos) but don’t – whatever you do – take them on on a tour of a lasting monument to the British colonization of Bermuda and expect to be taken seriously!

@ Tigga, I share your views on the subject, WL words reek of hypocrisy and window dressing. I often question why PLP politicians and followers continue to accept awards from Buckingham Palace! What is more colonial than that? By the way I forgot Lister was an MP as I haven’t heard from him in a long while. I guess he felt the need to impress the visitors, as I havent heard him speak on the subject before they arrived.

Hey Lister… You are out-of-power!!! Bermuda is NOT going Independent… Repeat Bermuda is NOT going Independent!!!

We are going to remain a British Colony – so get that through your “thick head”!!!
