Offshore Fuel Transfer For Bermuda-Bound Boat

August 1, 2010

gas pumpA mid-ocean fuel transfer between two boats enabled a boat to safely make its way to Bermuda after its mast broke and it was unable to continue sailing.

The sailboat, Remedy, was approximately 508 nautical miles northeast of Bermuda with three persons on board when they reported to Bermuda Radio that their boat was dismasted and they would be diverting to Bermuda under engine power. Remedy only had sufficient fuel to travel within 150 nautical miles of the Island, so Bermuda Radio sought a fuel transfer by any vessels in the area that could assist.

Bermuda Radio contacted the Serenea, which was inbound to Bermuda and on July 27th at around 7am they rendezvoused with Remedy approximately 240 nautical miles northeast of Bermuda and successfully transferred fuel.

After the successful fuel transfer, Serenea continued on her voyage from Hound Point, England to Port Arthur Texas, USA, while Remedy continues under her own power to Bermuda.
