Sanchey Grant Denies Attempted Murder Charges

Today [Aug 2] 19-year-old Sanchey Winslow Grant of Warwick Parish pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder, as well as two firearm/ammunition possession charges. He appeared before Chief Justice Richard Ground during the monthly arraignment session at Supreme Court, and was remanded in custody with a trial date expected to be set in the coming weeks.

All four charges relate to the November 13th 2009 shooting outside the Southside Cinema which resulted in gunshot wounds to 26 year old Devonshire Cougars footballer Shaki Minors and 24 yr old Cedarbridge teacher Renee Kuchler, who were shot as they left Southside Cinema in St. David’s at approximately 11.30 pm. Both were rushed to hospital, and recovered from their injuries.

28-year-old Jahmel Blakeney is also accused in relation to this incident. Mr Blakeney was initially arrested in connection with the incident, bailed out, and never answered Police bail. Enquiries revealed he left the Island on November 30, 2009, and was tracked by the Bermuda Police Service to the New York where he was arrested in June 2010. He is presently incarcerated in New York while the extradition request is being processed.
