Premier in London: Overseas Territories Meeting

Premier Paula Cox left the island last evening [Nov 14] to attend the annual Overseas Territories Consultative Council [OTCC] meeting in London.

The meeting with Heads of Government of the Overseas Territories is held annually and affords leaders the opportunity to meet with the UK Minister and other policy leaders on matters of concern.

Accompanied by newly appointed Secretary to the Cabinet, Mr. Donald Scott, Premier Cox will engage with the British Government in discussions of specific interest to Bermuda and mutual interest in Bermuda’s relationship with the Commonwealth.

This year’s meeting will be held on Wednesday, 17 November and will be chaired by Mr. Henry Bellingham MP, Minister for the Overseas Territories.

Topics to be discussed during the sessions are the UK/Overseas Territories relationship and the new strategy for the Overseas Territories; Criminal Justice in the Territories; Transport [Aviation and Maritime]; the Environment. The final session on Identity and Passport Services, will be lead by Premier Cox on behalf of the Territories.

Bermuda will additionally hold a separate bilateral meeting Mr. Bellingham, the Minister for the Overseas Territories.

Apart from the main programme, a number of additional events have taken place or have been scheduled. Today the Premier met with the United Kingdom Overseas Territories Association (UKOTA), an amalgamation of territory leaders who meet to discuss regional matters of common interest that can be presented during OTCC sessions. She also officially opened the Department of Civil Aviation’s London office today.

Tomorrow she will meet with the Britain/Bermuda All Party Parliamentary group to hear more about their work and to discuss how their efforts in support of Bermuda can be made more effective in the future.
