rick-thomas-magic-Do you believe in magic? You will after seeing the Rick Thomas Magic Show says the Sandys Rotary Club — and you’ll also be making wishes come true for Bermuda’s children by attending the Las Vegas illusionist’s upcoming Fairmont Southampton appearances.

A Sandys Rotary spokesman said the service group takes great pride in presenting to the public of Bermuda a first class, family orientated, educational form of entertainment intended to raise funds for local charities which assist in the needs of children and families.

“It has been 14 years since Sandys Rotary produced its last extravaganza,” said the spokesman. “The 1996 Circus from Canada was enjoyed by an audience of some 18,000 persons, from all walks of life and raised in excess of $100,000.00 These monies were distributed to many Bermuda charities and as well assisted a number of Bermudians, through the distributing of educational grants for higher education.

“The Rick Thomas show, direct from Las Vegas, USA, represents to us the necessary qualities we desired in our search. Mr. Thomas has entertained audiences in 50 plus countries around the world. Some of our members have enjoyed Mr. Thomas’s show in Las Vegas and we have been in negotiations for over a year to secure his performances in Bermuda in February and March.”

A gala fundraising dinner at the Fairmont Southampton next Friday [Feb. 25] will kick off the celebrated illusionist’s series of Bermuda performances which continue until March 5.

“The gala will consist of a cocktail reception, gourmet dinner with wine, the Rick Thomas Magic Show, followed by dancing to DJ provided by Lifestyle Entertainment,” said the Sandys Rotary spokesman.  “It will be a fun-filled night for everyone!  All of our corporate sponsors will be there and it will be a great chance to mingle with friends and colleagues and meet the artist himself, Rick Thomas, along with his performers.  We will also have a raffle draw for incredible prizes. To purchase tickets for this special event contact galatickets@rickthomasbermuda.com or call 531-2725.

“It has been many years since Bermudians have had an opportunity to enjoy a dinner and Las Vegas Act, and it may be many more before this happens again!  We want to make this opening night a special occasion that people will never forget!”

Due to travel-related costs Mr. Thomas is unable to bring the full menagerie of his Las Vegas act to Bermuda. However, he is designing a show that is specific for the Bermuda audience and facilities offered locally. Mr. Thomas’s work with domesticated tigers is recognised not only in the United States but throughout the world.

“It is for this aspect of his performance we believe that those who attend Mr. Thomas show will come away with a new and profound sense of not only the majesty of these animals but an education on all that is being done to educate people on the difficulties these animals are having in the world,” said the spokesman. “In addition Mr. Thomas is a world class illusionist. His performance will keep people of all ages spellbound and wondering ‘How did he do that’!”

Sandys Rotary said despite its best efforts to address the concerns of both the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and individual Bermudians who have been critical of Mr. Thomas’ use of tigers in his show, not everyone will support the decision to bring the performer to the island.

“We understand that no matter what type of entertainment is sought there will be its detractors,” said the spokesman. “That is the price we pay for living in a democracy. However, we take pride in knowing that clear and sufficient due diligence has been taken in making our decisions – and we respect those persons and or organisations, who after doing the same, disagree.”
