Bermuda Defeat Mexico, Move Into Finals

June 6, 2011

Bermuda’s National Rugby team travelled to Mexico City this past weekend and soundly defeated Mexico to move into the finals of the 15-a-side Caribbean Championships.

Bermuda put on a dominating performance beating Mexico 26-7, and now await the result of the match between Guyana and Barbados to determine who they will play in the finals.

The match report on the the North America Caribbean Rugby Association [NACRA] website says, “Four first half penalties by Greg Fraser set Bermuda on the road to the 2011 NACRA 15 a-side finals. Bermuda dominated the first half, choosing to keep the ball tight and in close proximity to their forwards throughout. Bermuda’s dominance paid dividends as the hosts infringed on numerous occassions, allowing Fraser to slot home repeated penalties.”

“The match was more or less sealed in the fisrt half, with a try by prop Alan Steale, again after strong pressure from the Bermuda pack inside the Mexican 22. Fraser converted to give Bermuda a 19-0 half time lead and a huge hill to climb for Mexico.”

“Bermuda again started strong and after 14 minutes of the half extended their lead to 24-0 through centre Geg Garside. Fraser converted to put Bermuda 26-0 in the lead.”

“Mexico eventually gained some possesion and showed their capabilities with a well worked try and strong running which saw No 8 Simon Pierre score after 22 minutes. Fly half Miguel Carner converted to take the scores to 26-7 in Bermuda’s favour. Unfortunately the Mexican flourish was too little too late.”
