Video: Aspiring Filmmaker Heading To India
Charles Butterfield is one of two aspiring Bermudian filmmakers who will be attending Whistling Woods International in India next month.
Charles, along with Jason Jackson, received a scholarship to study Filming and Broadcasting at the Mumbai school.
Charles said, “My old teacher saw some potential in me and she said I should look into some schools. During my last year at CedarBridge I was looking into schools when the scholarship opportunity to go to India came up, so I took that opportunity and here I am.”
“What piqued my interest in filmmaking was watching TV and movies. I always wanted to know what made the movies. What went on behind the scenes… I just was always fascinated in that saturation, that part of the industry.”
The scholarships came about last year, after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by former Premier Dr Ewart Brown with the school, in which WWI will recommend Bermuda to the Indian entertainment industry and the Government of Bermuda will provide sponsorships to two students every year from Bermuda to study filmmaking at WWI.
Asked about how be feels about traveling across the world to school, Charles said, “I am not the average person going to Canada, to the US…I am going to India, that’s a big difference, like a big culture shock.”
“It’s different though and I’m willing to take the opportunity and to show what I can produce coming out of India. I have done some deep research into going into India, the stuff that I should and should not do.”
“I’m learning bits and pieces of language, but you know, your basic hellos, goodbyes and stuff like that but I would obviously learn more once I’m over there because I’m gonna be constantly surrounded by it.”
“I just wanna broaden myself all over, not just Bermuda, “said Charles. “So I’m not limitless… I would honestly say I would look at that as a big opportunity.”
“I do have a Bermudian roommate as well, Jason Jackson. He is going be with me too and will be taking up the same thing. As two Bermudians out there we should produce some great things.”
“And you will hear more about us. I just wanna say, if you’re pursuing anything like I’m pursuing, just go for it. Don’t just stay around and think about doing it. Just do it. Just go forward.”

Well Done Jason and Charles I know Jason and he is such a wonderful young man and credit to Bermuda and his parents and family you should be very proud. he just came from Argentina as a rotary Exchange student and was very successful in a Debate Competition in The West Indies last year. For Walter his father you must be very proud of your son as you deal with lots of wayward boys everyday and you see first hand from your son that you are truly blessed. For His mother you have seen how young man can get mixed with the wrong company. To his Aunt who does what she does because of love for family just continue as you reap what you sow. J Rock and Charles enjoy India and I look forward to seeing you both on the big Screen one day.

Charles, I remember you during my employment days at CBA. You are going to do great things young man! Keep up the good work and the only advice I can give you is to be a “sponge”. Absorb everything and become “GREAT”! You have a drive that is unusually seen portrayed in the media. I can’t wait to see what you are going to do with your talent. Best wishes to you and Jason.
