Police: Cup Match Holiday “Relatively Safe”

July 31, 2011

Today [July 31] a police spokesperson said the Cup Match holiday was a “relatively safe one,” and although there were minor incidents, there were “no major and or critical incidents of note.”

Reported incidents over the holiday period included the fighting at BeachFest which caused the event to be shut down over five hours early, a fight at Southampton Rangers, and a 40-year old man being arrested at St. George Cricket Club gate with drug paraphernalia.

Earlier this week the Bermuda Police Service said they would be out in full strength over the Cup Match Holiday weekend, bolstered by the Police Reserves and the Bermuda Regiment – who assisted with patrolling the waters.

Prior to Cup Match, Acting Assistant Commissioner Weekes issued a warning to would-be troublemakers saying, “Those persons who are not deterred by the presence of the police and commit offences can expect to be promptly arrested and delivered to the Courts.”

Over the weekend Police officers could be seen out in high numbers at various events, outside Hamilton night spots and also in areas prone to gang violence.

This afternoon a police spokesperson said, “The Cup Match holiday was a relatively safe one with many proactive policing initiatives seeing a very uneventful weekend.”

“On both Friday, Saturday and Sunday, (as of 3pm on Sunday) Police maintained a very strong police presence at all of the events that were scheduled around the island for that period of time. Officers were visible at the liquor license establishments, parties, and all major social gatherings.”

“Officers patrolled from east to west by, land and sea to maintain law and order and we can report there were no major incidents of note to report.”

“Clearly, there were minor incidents that took place over that period of time, but there was no major and or critical incidents of note.”

Great to hear. Hats off to the bouys in bloo. And hats off to the people who helped make it a great weekend. The naughty ones knew and the average person grew. Lets keep it up.

Per the report: “On both Friday, Saturday and Sunday, (as of 3pm on Sunday) Police maintained a very strong police presence at all of the events that were scheduled around the island for that period of time…”, it would appear to me that when the Bermuda Police Service perform their job – by being present, vigilent and effective, we can expect to see a reduction of the prevailing anti-social behaviour. This type of policing should be performed and seen EVERY DAY and not just on occasions.
