Latin Restaurant Relaunching As Victoria Grill

October 7, 2011

The restaurant formerly known as Latin will be completely changing its cuisine and will be relaunching as Victoria Grill, a North American city style bistro.

Featuring upscale~casual and widely appealing food to suit all tastes and price points, Victoria Grill, located at 29 Victoria Street, will reopen on Wednesday October 12, 2011 for lunch and dinner.

Philip Barnett, President of Island Restaurant Group Ltd. (IRG) which owns Victoria Grill said “After long and careful consideration, and much canvassing of key customers, we decided that their needs will be better met with a new food focus on broadly recognizable dishes in a classic city bistro style”.

Spearheading the effort from the kitchen will be Chef de Cuisine Tom Tabor who has been with IRG for two years, formerly running the kitchen at the Seahorse Grill at Elbow Beach.

“Let’s be honest”, said Mr Tabor, “a restaurant is all about the food, and these menus that Executive Chef Derek Myers and I have created really focus on the freshness of the ingredients and straightforward but expert execution of each dish. I am really excited to add my passion and style to the new cuisine”

Transferring over from sister property Barracuda Grill to run Victoria Grill, will be well known Maitre D’ Kevin Rhyno.

“In today’s economy, it is more imperative than ever to give guests exactly what they want; and attentive, knowledgeable and professional service, with delicious and reasonably priced food is what we know we must provide to give maximum value to our diners”, said Mr Rhyno.

Mr Rhyno added, “Most of my customers know my love of wines. My goal here is to build a realistic wine list and by the glass selection that has appeal across all price points, but most importantly is perfectly matched with the food.”

Victoria Grill will be closing briefly to make the necessary changes in the dining room and kitchen to suit the new cuisine direction; however Java Jive will remain open normal hours during the short closure for gourmet take away breakfast, pastries, lunch and fine coffee and teas.

IRG Ltd. operates Barracuda Grill, Pickled Onion, Hog Penny and Victoria Grill restaurants.

  1. Latin finale | Chicago Addick | October 12, 2011
  1. RME says:

Getting rid of Latin?!!! Seriously? I was planning to call there today to make a reservation for my birthday next week. A bad idea in my opinion. I loved going to Latin for their current menu. So what, now I’m stuck going to Rosa’s if I want Mexican/Latin cuisine. Their guacamole was outstanding as well and otherwise I don’t eat avocado. I suppose that’s gone off the menu too.

    • 28Red says:

I have been reliably told the guacimole is one of the only items that will be remaining…

      • RME says:

Thanks. I just heard that as well. I’m happy about that.

      • recipe for good guacamole says:

        guacamole recipe from a
proud guacamole maker ! 5 ripe avocadoes ,3 tomatoes ,one white onion, 2 fresh jalapeños,one green lemon . one tea spoon of salt and half a tea spoon of black pepper.
remove the avocadoes from the skin take the bone out by hiting it slightly with a knife turn and remove place on a bowl with diced tomatoes, onions and jalapeños, food processor work as well ,sprinkle salt and pepper on top and squeese lemon use a potato smasher to smash and mix and bravo!please do not use purple onion as do restaurants in bermuda as it will give you plenty of gas! avoid puttin to may tomatoes as some restaurants do to increase volume as to the expense of avocadoes to many tomatoes will kill the flavour do not use boxed mix it’s bad in taste all must be fresh!please under no circumstances put mayo as do in the states.

I am very proud of my guacamole and so are those that have tried it . good luck.

  2. The Future says:

yikes. oh well. so much for latin…

  3. Another one bites the dust says:

Maybe if they did Latin food the way Latin food should be done… They are about as Latin as Rosa’s is Mexican…sad.

Soooo…yet another bistro style restaurant…sigh, why not another Italian restaurant….???? Will Latin have the same menu as the new Silk?

Sign of the times people…NEWSFLASH: there just aren’t as many people living and eating on this island as there were before! You can’t make them eat if they aren’t here. Long commute from Ireland, Switzerland, Cayman…

    • Paula Cox's Orange Pippin says:

You are so right. Much of this trade is business trade, and they are going home. As an ex-pat, half of my office is leaving voluntarily – why? – because we feel unwanted and because we could get turfed off at 2-3 year’s notice. I’ve got kids and need to plan longer than that. END TERM LIMITS NOW…..or get used to restaurants closing Bda.

    • ignorant says:

I haven’t laughed so hard all day, @The Future, that was hilarious

  4. Terry says:

You gys are so funny. You bitch, you moan, you groan about everything.

Bermuda is nothing more than a pickled onion.

  5. next? says:

Latin was pretty good. I liked the food.
What the hell is going to make me want to go to a basement, semi- Backatown venue- unless it has a unique selling point?
Plenty of nice restaurants on (or just off) Front Street.
Better hope Mr Tabor has something amazing to offer- because in this economic climate you’ll need it mate.
    Boo.

    • Dee says:

Having only eaten at Latin twice and on both occasions had bad service and mediocre food I can’t say I am surprised. Too many covers crammed into too small a space, too noisy, slow and inefficient service and food which is about as Latin as the diner next door!

      • Bullseye says:

I had the same experience. I will try the new one.

  6. Churro-less in Smiths says:

OH PLEASE DON’T take the churros off of the menu!!!! BEGGING!! ARGHHHH ….

  7. soon leavin' says:

    Term limits=no expats=no money=no Latin= 3rd world Bermuda

    • relevant says:

      dear Soon Leavin,
My apoligies to you all the expats that feel unwanted. Unfortunately the rise of IB here was so fast and those in power did too little to make sure that the majority of the people would reap many of the benefits that the services of you and thousands of others bring to our island. This has along with subpar education (which has spiraled downhill with the introduction of the middle schools and has since become a political football) has caused the mindset of many to be sour and missing some smarts as well as common sense.

Economically the cooling off of IB is not good for restaurants, retailers and for many Bermudians. However it may be beneficial as it will give Bermuda’s leaders and her people an opportunity to look at policies and programmes that ensure Bermudians have a fair chance in enjoying a life that many foreigners experience when they move to our shores.

  8. soon leavin' says:

By the way ,Cafe 4 in the Washington Mall just shrunk the size of their popular lunch take-away salads by about half and charge the same price.Yet another “bite the hand that feeds you” business mistake.

  9. navin johnson says:

The best restaurant in Bermuda by far bar non without a shadow of a doubt is my home. Most have gone down hill in terms of quality and up in price and every time we go out we usually say to ourselves that is another one off the list….Little V is probably as close to an old standby as we have…this winter will be bleak for restaurants with IB the only thing keeping most of them afloat……

    • PEPPER says:

I agree with you Navin, our home is the best place to eat also….and I do not have to pay $ 11.0O for a glass of wine !!!Lord you can buy ” Yellow Tail” ( this is a great wine for about $11.00)

  10. Ace Girl (Original) says:

Never eaten at Latin, won’t eat at the new place either. Too far north of town to be safe walking at night.

  11. kiskadee says:

Lets hope they dont employ Indian chefs like the newly named Italian restaurant off Front Street which is ”food like my mother used to make me”, according to the Italian owner.. Italian food is spoiled by the heavy spices. The restaurant is supposed to be helping customers weather the recession by offering early bird specials. A glass of house wine is $11.50 and the cheapest bottle of wine is $50 so unless you drink only water and want to eat Indian food in an Italian restaurant dont go !!!

    • STEWEY BABCOCK says:

You’ve summed it up nicely …

    • navin johnson says:

And slow service with only 6 people in the place went once won’t go back….

  12. The Rock says:

Expensive, average food and the place is too dark. all the best to the new grill.

  13. KellyBermuda says:

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…and it wasn’t broke! My ONLY complaint about Latin was the expense. The food was excellent, as was the service…AND the best guacamole and sangria on the rock. Now they’re going to put in a cookie-cutter bistro? Zzzzzzzzzz
