Bermuda To Host Corporate Games

November 16, 2011

Bermuda will play host to next year’s Corporate Games — an annual event which will draw hundreds of competitors and supporters to the island from some of the world’s leading companies.

At a briefing today [Nov. 16], Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert announced the event — described as a cross between athletics, networking and tourism — would take place next fall.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I am excited to report that Bermuda will be host to the 2012 Corporate Games from October 25-27, 2012,” he said. “For the first time the Corporate Games will be held in the Atlantic region. The event has been held annually since 1991 and is owned by a company called Sports For Life Limited.

“To make this event happen, many of Bermuda’s sports facilities will facilitate up to fifteen games sanctioned by the sport’s National Governing Bodies. It is anticipated that the National Sports Centre will serve as the host venue. The event is targeted to bring between 500 to 750 visitor participants.”

Mr. Furbert said as host country, Bermuda will have the opportunity to foster a special relationship between high-net worth corporate entities both on-island and around the world that support their staff members who participate in the event.

“The event will assist the Ministry in promoting Bermuda as a sports tourism destination and will create a spectacle that will appeal to a broad audience whether sport fan or not,” he said. “The initiative includes a significant amount of added value through marketing and promotional opportunities in overseas markets.”

The inaugural Corporate Games were held in San Francisco. Nelson Mandela was patron of the first multiracial global sports event held in South Africa in the post apartheid era — the World Corporate Games held in Johannesburg in 1994.

“From its conception, the Corporate Games has been a truly global movement of weekend sports warriors, those everyday athletes who get fit for business and for life through participation in sport that can last a lifetime,” said a Sports For Life spokesman.

Helllooo anyone out their read this positive news?? Things like this don’t just fall in our laps, this is hard work done by the BDOT and Hotels. Well done Team!

  2. Rick Rock says:

Yes, we’re really glad to see forecasts of things due to take place a year from now. A bit like when, a year ago, the then PLP Premier Dr Ewart Brown said that funding was in place, and work would start on the building of the Park Hyatt in November 2011. Don’t know about you, but looks like that deal wasn’t finalised when the announcement was made. Either that or it was a complete fabrication made up so that the Doc would look good in front of cameras.

Promises are only worth something when you can trust the person you hear it from.

  3. Right/Wrong swing Voter says:

Keep pushing on Minister Furbert, you are a hard worker and care about providing service to this country. Keep pushing on….

    • Rick Rock says:

Keep pushing on? Huh? He’s only been there a week and most of that has been spent on a boondoggle in the UK. Why is he taking credit for it?

When you talk about Furbert, I assume you mean the UBP/PLP guy?

  4. Shaking the Head says:

Except this was brought to Bermuda because of a private initiative with some Government support and funding. Of course the Minister will take credit, but this was not something the BDOT and Hotels developed.

    • flikel says:

      Wow,

Again, whenever something bad happens, it is entirely the fault of the PLP and the Government.

Whenever there is positive news, the Government and PLP had nothing to do with it.

People like you make me laugh. You never give credit when credit is due and you will always find fault with the Government/PLP.

I assume you are a OBA supporter and this comment does not entice me to support this party. In fact, it has the oppositve effect…..These types of comments will only keep the PLP in power.

  5. Shaking the Head says:

That is not what I said, read it again. This was an initiative from the private sector who took it to Govenment who assisted. Where is there any reference in the Minister’s announcement to this fact? None, and he makes it sound as if it was 100% Government, which is factually incorrect.

  6. starman says:

“These types of comments will only keep the PLP in power.”

Nonsense. Comments like these expose PLP/UBP extreme weaknesses in governance — which is why they will go to any length to cover it up. Or spin it around in the Kool Aid.

Let’s face it, the PLP are history.

    OBA all de vay!!!!!

  7. What a joke its great to be a ex-pat here in bermuda get paid to play and BDA Gov pays for it, I love this place!!
