Premier Cox’s 2011 Christmas Message

December 23, 2011

My fellow Bermudians and friends,

Christmas is the time of the year when we reconnect with family and friends. Faith and fellowship also come to mind in this festive season.

I love this time of the year. I appreciate the smiles, the warmth and our determined spirit. We have a wonderful diversity of religion, culture and races and we have an incredible opportunity to build one another together.

My Christmas this year truly began with the delightful experience of the tree trimming ceremony on Cabinet grounds earlier this month. It was a joy to see the sparkle and pleasure in the eyes of the children as they worked together to decorate three trees. They did not know each other yet pulled together in an exciting, bundle of energy and enthusiasm.

As we get pleasure in making Christmas especially happy for our children, let us cherish moments such as these, because they don’t stay little for long. I look at my own son. He is no longer a little boy but growing up to be quite the young man. I look at him and think about the man he will grow up to be. So it is important that we cherish these special moments with our young ones.

This time of year is always such a bustling time and it causes us to pause and wonder, are we ever quite ready for Christmas? It seems to creep up on us even though it comes the same time every year. But these are not usual times.

Given our concerns about our own personal circumstances, the real question is not so much whether we are ready, but what kind of Christmas can we afford. The financial pain is real throughout our community. Clearly this is a severely testing time for all, especially for those struggling to make ends meet.

The recession has redefined the financial realities of this holiday season though it does not change the reason for the season. God’s gift to the world for those of us of the Christian faith refuses to be defined purely in economic terms.

Equally real are the many acts of caring and generosity by our churches and civic organisations – each going the extra mile to assist in these trying times. Many provide help without fanfare or public recognition and we truly appreciate their unselfishness and their efforts.

The Government’s helping agencies and our charities will continue to do all to assist those in need and we will continue to assist post Christmas. So this holiday season let us come together and share the important gifts that have no financial cost… the gift of love, the gift of compassion, the gift of forgiveness.

This is also a time for us to remember those who may have lost a loved one or who do not have someone special in their life. Let us keep these individuals in our thoughts this holiday season.

Finally, many of us will see the New Year that is fast approaching as a new beginning. It is my hope that in the coming year we will not forget the bonds of family or the ties that bind us as a community. Let us enter the New Year believing in ourselves, believing in Bermuda and in our capacity to create a better tomorrow.

I extend warm wishes from all members of the Government and their families, for a peaceful and joyous Christmas.

From my family to all of Bermuda, Merry Christmas

  3. Liars says:

l dislike her because she divides black from white as ALL the PLP menmbers do and have done over the past 20-30 years. The BIU is an utter stink fest that the PLP has always used for money, for advise, for the leadership they were alawy bound to get. And now because the guy in charge at the BIU is a moron; the entire cakefest is going down the toilet….haha…..try reading something that isn’t about things that have happened over the past 400 years and start doing what will take us into the next 400 years……because time is something that can never be erased so if l were you l would stop and take note of that as you are all going to go down as the worst wannabe politicians in history especially if you keep people that just love to hear there own voice beside you Mrs. Premier.

      @ Liars

You sound like a sick person. Your acting like your 10 years old, but then again my 9 year old wouldn’t write such horse crap. I’m pretty sure by your comments that your not voting for the PLP.

As a former member of the UBP and now OBA, which I’m proud of. Do the country a favor and stay home the day of the election. I really don’t need anyone as immature as you voting for my team. I need positive people helping me not garbage rats.

To the rest of the OBA members have a Merry Christmas.
