Court: 17-Yr-Old Suspect Remanded

January 26, 2012

In Magistrates Court this morning [Jan.26], 17-year-old Marcus Tucker pleaded not guilty to a charge of trespassing in a dwelling in Devonshire and stealing a Blackberry and other items to a total value exceeding $1,600.

After hearing his not guilty plea, the Prosecutor asked that the Pembroke teenager be remanded into custody. Duty Counsel Ms Moore-Williams argued that Mr Tucker should be granted bail and released on bail into the custody of his mother who, Ms Moore-Williams pointed out, was present in Court.

Noting that Mr Tucker was currently out on bail on one matter, and was also serving under a separate Probation Orders made by the Courts; Senior Magistrate Archie Warner ordered that he should be remanded into custody at the COED facility until his trial date, on this matter, of 1st March 2012.

It appears that Westgate has become the new MIDDLE SCHOOL of Bermuda. HOORAY…. 3/4 of these guys (ok – maybe i’m exagerating but i’m sure the number is high) in prison do not even have a high school education. I say we make it MANDATORY that they get their high school diploma before even being considered for release. Whether their time is up or not. Lock em up and dont let em out until they graduate.

It dont matter if they get their GED they still will have trouble getting a job. I know a student who obtained a high school graduate diploma and a GED in the same year (2010) and has applied for several entry level positions and could not get the simplest of jobs. Been looking for almost 2 years. Never been in trouble and has worked summer jobs leading up to graduation. So these brothers dont stand a chance. Sorry to say.
