Petition Delivered To Deputy Premier

January 20, 2012

[Updated with photos/videos] Community activist Scott Smith is at City Hall this morning [Jan.20] collecting signatures on a petition seeking to enact stronger anti-gang legislation.

Mr Smith [pictured] spoke yesterday at the funeral of Stefan Burgess, calling for the community to take action against the upsurge in shooting violence.

24-year-old Stefan Burgess was shot and killed on Glebe Road on January 8th, with the death of the father-of-one marking the first murder of 2012.

Three men have been arrested in connection with his murder, however no charges have been laid at this time.

Speaking with us this morning, Mr Smith said too many locals are “sitting by, going to funerals, then going on usual,” and that he and others are trying to work for tangible changes.

Mr Smith said the meeting for this morning was set for 10am, in front of City Hall. When asked how long he plans to be there, he said “as long as it takes.”

After collecting signatures Mr Smith plans to march to the Cabinet Building on Front Street to present the petition to Premier Paula Cox.

Update 12.34pm: The small group walked to the House of Assembly and presented the petition to Deputy Premier Derrick Burgess.

Update 2:00pm: Video of Mr Smith speaking about this morning’s event. He said that approximately 30 people came out this morning, and they all feel that “enough is enough” and want change in the island.

The whole reason that Wayne Perinchief’s legislation didn’t go through the first time was because some of his OWN CABINET did not support him! Hopefully these petitions will help get more support!

    • Ain't that something says:

And I wonder why his OWN CABINET did not support him? Things that make you do hmmmm….

My question is besides running to Government and asking them to change legislation what they (the church) doing other than making press statements. And banning tinted visors is not gonna stop the shootings in fact it may help them because all they will do is wear shades and a bandanna after they shoot remove bandanna and their on their way. A tinted visor is much harder to remove especially when your riding a motorcycle. The problem is they are way out of sight by the time authorities arrive. Just my opinion. What do yall think?

God bless your ENDEAVOURS ! Bda time to stand up for our RIGHTS , don’t allow so few to have so much power…………. TIME TO END THE MADDNESS !!!!!!!

  6. The Hell!! says:

Why is it every time there is a problem that we can’t seem to solve we wanna use the band aide and ban something instead of getting to the root of the problem. What our we doing to disrupt or break up these gangs. Soon we want be able to leave our homes because there will be so many things that are banned. Police start kicking down some doors, use the social network to set up traps, parents or friends & relatives you know someone has or you’ve seen a gun report it. No one gives a dam until it starts to effect them and that’s the attitude from Government all they way down. Most of these criminals are the “I’m gonna do what I want & I don’t give a dam” mommas boys. You catch them give them hard labor witch is obviously something they are lacking. What do you think?
