Activist Extends Helping Hand To Bahamians

April 13, 2013

Scott-Smith-BermudaBermuda community activist George Scott Smith is reaching out to Bahamians who have hit rock bottom and need some encouragement as they address their problems.

Currently in the Bahamas, he has offered to talk to groups in schools, prisons and rehabilitation programmes free of charge.

The born-again Christian — who has counselled Bermudian families grieving after gang shootings — told Bahamian news outlets he feels as if churches should close their door for a month and take to the streets.

“Our message as a body of believers is to spread love,” he said. “How can you spread love? The church needs to go out in the highways and byways.”

Although he is not an ordained Minister, Mr. Scott Smith [pictured] is a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church on Glebe Road in Pembroke.

He is a reformed drug user who found salvation when he found Christ; he says he became an addict at the age of 12, starting with marijuana and moving on to alcohol, cocaine and crack.

“I eventually cried out to God for help. I never went to any rehab,” explained Mr. Scott Smith. He quit drugs on New Year’s Eve 1994 and has been clean ever since.

He is active as a preacher in the osland’s schools, prisons and rehabilitation programmes and also runs his own business as a painter and decorator.

“This generation coming up now, I used to hang with their fathers. I like to be a father figure to them,” he explained.

Although he found his own way to the church, he acknowledged that most people living on the wrong side of the tracks are not going to make the first move towards spiritual healing.

“We have to have something to compel them to come. You can’t say ‘come to my church and let’s have fun.’ That’s what we have been called to do,” he said.
