Bean & Aitken Set New Bermuda Records

April 1, 2012

Two new Bermuda records have been set in recent days, with Taylor-Ashley Bean shattering the Bermuda Junior Female National 1500m record in Virginia, while Kiera Aitken set a new Bermuda Women’s 50-Meter Backstroke record in Spain.

Eighteen-year-old college freshman Taylor-Ashley Bean is a freshman at Virginia State University, and a member of their track and field team, having received an athletic scholarship last year.

Competing at the Fred Hardy Invitational in Virginia, Ms Bean broke the previous record of 4:45.90 by more than three seconds. The record she broke had been set by her older sister Alexis Bean at the 2009 CARIFTA Games in St. Lucia.

Top local swimmer Kiera Aitken hit the pool at the Spanish Open Springtime National Championships in Malaga, Spain, where she won her Women’s 50-meter Backstroke heat, setting a new Bermuda Record of 29.47. In the finals, Ms Aitken lowered the Bermuda record yet again, clocking in at 29.31.
