Photos: Portugal Day Celebrations At Vasco

June 10, 2012

A cocktail party took place at the Vasco da Gama Club last night [June 9], as locals gathered to celebrate Portugal Day. Entertainment for the evening included children from the Portuguese School singing the national anthem in Portuguese, the reading of a poem, and a performance by the Youth Folklore dancers.

Portuguese school teacher Mr. Nuno Pais — who is departing Bermuda — was honoured at the event. He was thanked for his contributions in teaching the Portuguese language and presented with gifts by the Vasco da Gama Club executives.

Politicians seen at the event included Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier and OBA MP Cole Simons. Portugal Day is Portugal’s National Day celebrated annually in June. Although officially observed only in Portugal, Portuguese citizens and emigrants throughout the world celebrate the holiday. The June 10 date commemorates the death of literary icon Luís Vaz de Camões in 1580.
