Women’s Resource Center 25th Anniversary Events

June 13, 2012

The Women’s Resource Centre [WRC] will host a series of events later this month in honour of its 25th Anniversary.

With a theme of Strong Women, Strong Family, Strong Community threaded throughout their advocacy messages, the organization has spent the past two decades fighting for the personal empowerment and economic self-sufficiency of women through a range of programmes and services, including counseling, education and awareness.

And this month, it hopes to shine the spotlight on the Centre’s 25 years of work. Elaine Williams, Executive Director of the WRC said, “We have come a long way since our humble beginnings in 1987, and we truly want to encourage as many residents as possible to join in our upcoming celebrations to not only learn more about our role in the community, but how they can assist in our advocacy efforts.

Mrs. Williams explained, “We began as a support organisation for victims of sexual assault, and quickly recognized that greater support was needed for victims of domestic violence. Eventually we included in our support model a counseling service for parents who wanted to be re-united with their children after they have been in foster care.

“However as we enter into the next phase of our existence, we are evolving our organisation’s advocacy message to include a prevention model. We continue to offer assistance in the area of domestic violence, with a more specific focus on sexual assault awareness and prevention, but our focus has become the empowerment of women. Ultimately, our programmes and services reflect our desire to empower the women of Bermuda to become catalysts in creating strong families and a strong community.”

Events start on June 24th and will continue through July 1st. Some of the activities include, a Founder’s Day Tea and a Women’s Forum, which will feature Premier Paula Cox and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Sen. Kim Wilson.
