Ombudsman Recommends Review Extension

January 21, 2013

Ombudsman for Bermuda, Arlene Brock, has announced that she has recommended to the Bermuda Hospitals Board [BHB] that the deadline for the report by Howard Associates of their Clinical and Corporate Governance Review be extended from the end of January for one month to the end of February.

Ms. Brock noted: “As originally hoped, this is turning out to be a robust, comprehensive review of the BHB. I have met several times with Howard Associates and to date, am satisfied that they are thorough and getting a good grip on the issues.”

However, Ms. Brock noted that “Howard Associates still needs to complete interviews of some physicians and community stakeholders as there were some scheduling delays in December due to the election and the holiday season. This extension will also give them the time to meet with the new Minister and new BHB Board.”

Anyone who wishes to provide information directly to the Ombudsman for forwarding to the reviewers may still do so at: complaint@ombudsman.bm; tel: 441-296-6541; or 14 Dundonald St., Hamilton HM 09.

Speaking last year about the review, BHB CEO Venetta Symonds said: “So much has been achieved by BHB staff to improve our services, but we are listening to our patients and the community, and we know our focus has to be improving clinical quality further while driving down costs and being accountable to Bermuda for our service and activities.

“I believe we can raise the bar on clinical care by ensuring our clinical and corporate decision-making process is transparent, fair, collaborative, evidence-based and considers the system-wide implications in order to innovate and improve efficiencies for Bermuda as a whole. A Clinical and Corporate Governance Review will identify what more we need to do to strengthen that framework.”
