Wayne Furbert: Hyatt Contract Was Terminated

January 7, 2013

The former PLP Government terminated the Park Hyatt agreement as a result of their failure to commence the development of the property within the time frame, Shadow Minister of Tourism Wayne Furbert said last night.

The construction was supposed to have started some time ago, with initial press statements on the matter stating the resort was scheduled to open last year.

Back in September 2012 — when he was the Minister of Tourism — Mr Furbert told ZBM the agreement between the Government and developers of the planned Park Hyatt resort was “terminated.”

The following day he issued a statement saying he “misspoke,” and said that Mr Bazarian and his team were due to travel to Bermuda and the Ministry will be meeting with them the following week.

In a statement issued last night, Mr Furbert said: “The PLP Government terminated the agreement with the development company of the St George’s property as a result of their failure to commence the development of the property within the time frame outlined in the agreement.

“It was the PLP Government’s desire to have a hotel in St George’s. We were strongly committed to such a degree that we commissioned a report which showed the cost implications and possible revenue for a 5 Star Convention and Leisure Hotel on that site.

“It was our plan to hit the road running early in 2013 to meet developers and give a presentation. The presentation is at the Ministry of Tourism and we hope that Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell uses it to move things ahead,” concluded Mr Furbert.

I guess Wayne felt it better to come clean on his past “misspoken” words than have it come to light via an OBA announcement. I wonder what other things we will find out as time goes by.

  2. 75 and sunny says:

funny how none of that came out before or during the election…is this one of those ‘we had to mislead you’ things???

  3. Really! says:

What is it Wayne? Was the contract terminated or did you misspeak?

I refer to an article on Bernews back in September

“Minister Furbert subsequently issued a press statement this morning saying: “Yesterday, when I spoke on ZBM news, I misspoke when I said that government has terminated the Park Hyatt agreement.”

    PLP – (P)lease (L)eave (P)olitely

  4. Hurts When I Laugh says:

Here I Come To Save The DAAAYYYY!!!

  5. Y-Gurl says:

Once again Furbert flip flops all ove the place, if this was the case the PLP would have been all over it when the story came up a month ago, its wishful thinking on his part and im sure there are quite a few “contracts” that are coming to light he only wishes had been terminated before losing power.

  6. tidbit says:

When will Wayne Furbert every be honest. This does not do well for the PLP either. If this was the case of terminating the contract…why did they not reveal this before the election. They spent so much time talking about some former Party’s secret document(which Wayne Furbert was a member of at the time)…So now was this terminated contract a secret document(that Wayne furbert is again a part of but with a different Party) Bro.Leader Bean I think you better reevaluate your Shadow Tourism Minister( he seems to be on a personal agenda, and would do whatever to fit in).

    • KidUNot says:

“…why did they not reveal this before the election”? It’s obvious that the PLP did not anticipate losing. Wayne Furbert actions shouldn’t surprise anyone as he is like a cameleon.

    • Forward on, says:

don’t worry Wayne will spill all the dirty laundry when he decides to cross the aisle and sidle up with the either the OBA or some new party.

  7. Sledge Hamma says:

Another reason why the people of Bermuda stop believing what the PLP governemt said!

I respect him for coming clean on the subject but what is the point of lying. It will come out in the end!

  8. Triangle Drifter says:

Say what you want but look who elected him yet again. Given the PLP performance, lack of, & the shenanagins of ministers like Furbert, the OBA should have been voted in by a landslide popular & by seat vote.

What does this say about the Bermuda voter. Are they really that stupid or just ignorant. There is a difference. You can’t fix stupid. Ignorance can be educated.

    • swing voter says:

If my Furbert was my relative, I’ll tell him to his face how unelectable he really is…not being mean spirited, but I’ve felt that the guy was and is utterly useless as an upstanding credible polictician, no matter what side of the house he sits on….Hamilton Parish voters should be ashamed of themselves but after all, he is just a reflection of the voters in that constituency…..

  9. god1st says:

Wayne Furbert flip flopping ,every time this dude speaks i lol

  10. Verbal Kint says:

Wayne misspoke when he said he misspoke.

  11. I am UBP, PLP and now OBA says:

I saw Wayne Furbert exiting a certain office on Reid Street last week, and hastily moving along the road to hide his exit point, no i dont mean the coffee shop

Wayne can help get the number up to 19 Votes after Cole Simons becomes speaker, Mr Dodwell & Co have already enlisted Maxwell Burgess and Wayne Flip Flop Flop

    Hamilton Parish see

Wayne has been handing out his CV, there’s nothing wrong with him crossing the floor either a man has to pay his bills you know

    • M.R. says:

That would be hilarious and the worst move that the OBA could do.

    • Family Man says:

I thought he was a travel agent. Selling trips to the pyramids.

  12. Argosy says:

Lost for words to describe this guy…….and most of his PLP bunch.

Thank goodness they are out of the driver’s seat.

  13. god1st says:

Is Wayne Furbert handing out his Resume lol

  14. Bermudian says:

FLIP FLOP everytime you open your mouth you misspeak or as I like to call it LIE. Thanks OBA for not asking FLIP FLOP FURBERT to be the PLP minister to join you, firstly he would have joined you in a second, secondly if you did I would have voted for the PLP next time.

  15. Sandgrownan says:

    Can he even spell “honesty”?

He was either lying then or lying now, which is it? And using the blatant lie at the last minute in the election. The best thing he could now would be to STFU.

  16. jt says:

Not sure how his constituency can feel comfortable that he is truly interested in representing their interests – he’s all over the map.

  17. Victor says:

St. Georges betrayed yet again by PLP greed – The Bazarian shenanigans lasted so long because the Gang were promised a big kickback…

In the meantime, watch KEMH once the forensic auditors move in.

    • Sandgrownan says:

Indeed. Built for medicla tourism, not for sick people.

And under PFI/PPP which has been a dismal, coslty failure everywhere it’s been attempted for education and healthcare.

  18. sunshine says:

Wayne, say it ain’t so man!! What r you doing? Stop deceiving the people…you are digging a big big hole for yourself that apparently you are unable to get out of.

Like the previous writer states,”Wayne has bills to pay”, that is what the PLP has come down to..it is all about the mighty dollar.Has Randy Horton changed his mind about being the House Speaker, another one being lured by a dollar bill.

PLP abused their power (I’ll be fair, not all of them)and then they went sleep at the wheel, when they should have been pounding the pavement trying to convince the people of your platform and not deceiving us at every turn!

Hamilton Parish voters please wake up and stop enabling Wayne,he needs to find another career.

  19. Islander says:

I wonder how many voters in HP will regret their decision in re-electing Wayne

  20. ohyea! says:

kept that one quiet till after the election hmm figures! had to deceive us again maybe?

  21. ohyea! says:

funny how being fully commited to building hotels only gets voice at election time ?

  22. Noel Ashford says:

Wayne – I seem to remember publicly questioning you and chuckling about how we heard this 4 years ago.. and you *insisted* that “big things were coming” and that yes it was true. How can anybody take you seriously when you lie & flip flop constantly on behalf of a party as morally void as the PLP? Again, I second this comment to you – you should be ashamed of lying for them. You used to have more morals under better guidance in the UBP. Interesting to see how a little time in the PLP can corrupt even you – the very thing you used to preach about.

  23. Mad Dawg says:

He lies so much he can hardly keep it straight in his own mind.

  24. Limey says:

    Flip Flop Furbert

  25. Balanced Facts says:

“I am who I am” -Wayne Furbert on his cross the floor speech to the PLP.
You are indeed who you are…A JOKE! The only thing left for you is being Independent, again ,and cross into the abyss of mediocrity, at best, mediocrity at best!

  26. SoMuchMore says:

and if you all remember during the election, flip flop spoke about people should pray for him and he should get all the votes for his… wow! he should be ashamed of himself! he lies so damn much, he don’t even know when he lies. He better watch out for using prayer to get the people on his side and than betraying and lying, so sad.

  27. maybe says:

Wayne Furbert should receive an award for being a real actor, as he is, as older bermudians would say, a bad actor ( no good). Hang up your boots Wayne. Hopefully we can do away with two Furberts while we are at it- Wayne Furbert and Chris Furbert.

  28. Rockfish #1and#2 says:

    Wayne Furbert,

How many lies have you told our tourism partners when travelling overseas to sell Bermuda. One wonders what they are thinking now!

    PLP Leader Marc Bean,

Please consider removing Wayne Furbert from anything to do with tourism, he is an embarrassment to Bermudians both here and overseas. Hopefully you were not a party to this deceitful shambles.

  29. Prayerful says:

The Hamilton Parish constituents will continue to uphold Wayne, because, alfter all, he is famiily!

  30. pinocchio. says:

afraid one morning wf’s nose will have grown 5times!..the man never stop with his deceit!!

  31. flossy says:

only time will tell if he got the ‘audacity’ to cross again…and if he will be accepted that’s another kettle of fish…or should it be LIES??

  32. rhonda says:

wf..the village idiot…and that he would blame it on his parents..
