Nancy Anne Miller Releases ‘Missing Hurricanes’
Bermudian poet Nancy Anne Miller has released Missing Hurricanes, a work that “employs light and colour, interestingly, as allies or victims in the colonization process.”
Esther Philips, Poet Laureate of Barbados and editor of BIM: Arts for the 21st Century, said, “Missing Hurricanes furthers Nancy Anne Miller’s inquiry into a Bermudian life through a poetical examination of colonialisms, as well as indulging in the island’s sensations through poems that capture the physical impact of the terrain and ocean on one’s body. The first inquiry is time-driven, political, and layered; the second is ‘of the moment’ residing in the slowed-down time of a semitropical climate. Both necessary to convey extremities of island life, the paradisiacal and the blighted.
“In her suite of poems, Missing Hurricanes, Nancy Anne Miller employs light and colour, interestingly, as allies or victims in the colonization process. These elements of colour and light also appear in the poet’s efforts to shape memory, and to make sense of the world she inhabits. Nancy Anne Miller’s subtle use of language is its power.”
Amanda Symth, Trinidadian author of Look at You and Fortune, said, “These penetrating, unflinching poems explore what it means to inhabit two worlds. Miller writes about historical pain with haunting precision. The sun both brightens and burns; the wind presses down. All of it is here in her island life—nature, history, nostalgia, beauty, and the ghosts that linger still.”
Jeremy Poynting, Peepal Tree Press Founder and Managing Editor, said, “These poems have a quietly observant flow of precise visual description, a metaphorical aptness that suggests a powerful desire to never allow the sea-surrounded landscapes of Bermuda to escape from memory.”
Ms Miller is a Bermudian poet with thirteen published collections including Selected Poems [Valley Press, 2024]. Her poetry has been published in journals such as Edinburgh Review, Poetry Ireland Review, The Moth, Salzburg Review, Agenda, Stand, Magma, Ambit, The Fiddlehead, Dalhousie Review, The International Literary Quarterly, Postcolonial Text, The Caribbean Writer, among many others.
