people are desperate, money for drugs, maybe money just for survival! bermudas still on that slippery slope. very sad

    • I doubt his looking for money for drugs (um jus saying) because there isn’t any drugs to buy. Its only reality that I’m talking so don’t take it personal but if it was drugs around people wouldn’t be stealing, or robbing as much (um jus saying). Bermudians are suffering out here and its only gonna get worst sorry to say. BEING DEAD BROKE IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL. Don’t get mad its only REALITY

  13. Newly Optimistic Bermudian says:

@tricks are for kids. No one should give into thugs and be intimidated by them to not be able to open.

    • Tricks are for kids says:

Newly……not saying that they should be intimidated. Was just surprised to see them open so shortly after what can be considered a potential serious crime. That was all…

      • Smitty says:

Yeah, that would be pretty surprising. most places would have packed up shop and closed for the night after that due to wracked nerves or something

  14. W says:

I’m supposed to be visiting in the summer and was looking for a guest house in the west but I’m not so sure where is safe anymore

    • rob says:

Nowhere!! Bermuda is full of unemployed, uneducated , arrogant , little cry babies who dont wanna work or improve themselves …their only option is crime or hope their parents are rich !! Which, if there black their Not !!

      • Nuffin but de Truth! says:

I know a few Blacks who are stinking rich from ill gotton gains,so do you!
however, their kids are already in prison!

      • Somerset OG says:

I have a few rich black cousins that purchased a few plots of land, built houses and are rolling in rent money. Kids are set. The poor blacks in Bermuda play the blame game. Come up with a plan and make it happen instead of crying. What type of business can you start? Blacks will never get rich working for somebody else unless they have the smarts to become the President or CEO of a big company. Belco’s not going to get you rich. Leave Bermuda and open up a business overseas. Cheese and rice. Do you know how many Bermudians are in Jersey and can’t get their traditional Sunday cod fish breakfast anywhere? I’m looking to open a restaurant that caters to Bermudians too. I can get beef patties all day. Nothing new and different about a Jamaican restaurant. I’d make a killing if I did it. Think outside the box. Money Over Walls!

        • Tommy Chong says:

New Jersey? The state that ranks number 14 in violent crime out of all 50 states?

You are going to open a Bermudian Restaurant in snookieland? There are only about 3 dishes that are somewhat native to Bermuda & variants of these are made by Jamaican restaurants which are a dime a dozen in jersey.

There are plenty of older African descended Bermudians who have become wealthy while working for someone else here & entrepreneur their own business. The problem now is that many of these people have sold out to foreigners because they are not proud of their background & are prejudice of their own people.

    • Mr. Happy says:

It’s safe pretty much everywhere except a coupla areas…remember, positive experiences don’t make the news like crime does!

    • skinnydipper says:

they might call us dead and boring but one thing we safe in St Geo. Come down the east end my friend.

      • Onionboy says:

Not so. There was shooting/murder on St George golf course just this xmas. Also was gun-play at a dance @ RAA a lil while back. Also the hold-up in a St Davids variety sore recently. So nope. All 9 parishes on this 22 mile rock have been affected. (Sigh).

        • VL says:

Onion Boy, I would venture that living in St George’s or St. David’s is a lot safer than living Friswell’s Hill, St Monica’s Rd, Glebe Road, Bandroom Lane, etc. Sorry, don’t mean to offend anybody as there are good people that live in these areas too. However, most of the murders, crime and so forth is concentrated in little pockets of the island.

          • W says:

OK, looks as if there’s nowhere safe to stay in Bermuda any more. Decision made: headed to the Caribbean this summer. Thanks all for the info. Better safe than sorry.

            • Tommy Chong says:

The Caribbean where they have fenced in beaches & guards with automatic guns to protect the tourists? Even if this is a bit of an overkill for an island with less crime on tourist than the Caribbean Would it change your decision if we did this also?

            • The real W says:

I didn’t post that, I already bought my tickets, coming for Cup Match. Want to be near my child’s family campsite.

Hotels too $$$ and don’t want to camp in case it rains

Loved StG, lived there for 7 years. Miss the peace.

Don’t want to rent a random guesthouse anymore. Don’t know who’s gonna be living next door…

      • Tommy Chong says:

St. Georges is not so boring. There is great architecture & gardens & it has an interesting european feel. Plus there are some nice cosy beaches & still a few nice restaurants around. The only downside is public trans is not as efficient on that end & the nightlife isn’t that lively. Hopefully these downsides are addressed sometime before summer starts.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Don’t mind the nay sayers, Bermuda is still one of the safest island destination in the western hemisphere. Almost every shooting that has happened in Bermuda has been wannabe gangs against wannabe gangs. There has never been a tourist shot in Bermuda. There have been 10 robberies on tourist in the past three years where the majority were handbag snatches from rental bikes. You just have to have your wits about you just as going to any foreign country. If you rent a moped or scooter don’t leave anything valuable in your basket when riding or parked & don’t attach the bag to the basket so if it does get snatched you won’t get pulled with it. It’s best to find a rental bike that has storage under the seat. Also its advisable to ride on the main three roads south, middle & north at night & not going onto the side roads if there is no need to or even better take taxis at night & use the rental in the day. Try to find a guest house with a safe in the room & always leave your valuables in it unless you need to use them. Always keep your door locked in your room even if you are coming in for a few seconds. If you want to guarantee full safety pick a guest house that has rooms inside the main house & not external rooms as there is an extremely slim chance someone will target somewhere like this.

      • The real W says:

Thanks Tommy not a tourist, foreign parent of Bermudian child who left wen I realized that children have NO rights in your Beautiful country, but I digress.

I visit 3-4 times a year and each time it becomes harder and harder to book accommodation.

I doubt I will get shot but I pay at least $2000 each time I come and I deserve PEACE.

      • Local says:

Geesh, I live here and thought I was somewhat safe but after reading your instructions to tourists, I don’t feel safe now! Your instructions do not make for a very relaxing vacation! I would be scared to come here for vacation. Do all guest houses come with “safe rooms?”

Also, haven’t several tourists been held up by guns? Wasn’t a woman and her daughter raped / sexually assaulted at gunpoint recently? Shot or not, raped or assaulted, that’s too close for my comfort. Remind me, was Rebecca Middleton shot?

        • Tommy Chong says:

Don’t you lock your doors or protect your belongings in your vehicle? So why is this scary advice it’s just something that some may take for granted in Bermuda because this wasn’t necessary years ago. Bermuda is not a utopia but neither is anywhere else on earth. Taking precautions in a place traveling to does not mean the place is crime ridden it just a smart habit to do anywhere. At least I didn’t type don’t come out of your room at night & don’t go into our city which is the good advise that would be given to tourist going to most other island destinations. All guest houses should have safe rooms but the one where the tourists were robbed had a separate entrance & the occupants had left the door unlocked hence my advice. Also not all have in room safes to lock valuables in which can be extra assurance.

There have been a couple of incidences where tourist were held up with guns & one was a group in a room that I mentioned above which I guess can count as several in that instance. Can you point out a vacation destination that has less crime on tourist than Bermuda? I doubt it. This is expected anywhere in the world & its naive to think any place is 100% immune.

The sexual assault (not rape) you mentioned had one victim not that it makes it any better but just more factual. This was in an residential path neighborhood that isn’t frequented by tourist & has a reputation of wannabe gangsters living there. This is not something that is a constant in Bermuda like in other places. The culprits of this have been caught & sentenced to prison.

Rebecca Middleton was horribly raped & murdered but wasn’t shot & I think you know this but wanted me to answer. What happened to Miss Middleton was terrible but isn’t anything worse than what has happened to many in the country she came from. If she had taken more precaution this would not have happened. Not meaning that she was at fault of her own demise but jumping on a motorbike in between two total strangers & riding off is something no one should ever do. There is even speculation as to he motive for going with the two males. Plus her friend & her friend’s family should never have allowed her to be in that situation especially with the position her friend’s father held. As stated before Bermuda is not a utopia & neither is anywhere else.

    • Irritated by ignorant remarks!!!!! says:

Please do not pay attention to the comments of ‘rob.’ His racial comments show just how ignorant he is. It is people like rob who are helping all of those persons performing illegal acts to pull Bermuda down, instead of selling Bermuda…..maybe he should leave the island and go elsewhere (just saying)

It is unfortunate that Bermuda has become like the rest of the world (guns, gangs, violence) etc… However, what ‘rob’ has forgotten is that the misfits performing the illegal acts are a small part of the population, and by negatively highlighting what they are doing, he is giving credit where credit does not belong. When people, like rob, do these things, not only are they endorsing the bad behavior, but they are no better than the person(s) performing the act(s).

If you’re really interested in coming to Bermuda, there are lots of small guest houses and cottages in the west end, try this link http://www.bermudarentals.com/.

And please, please, please ignore ignorance (rob)

      • Tommy Chong says:

Rob is probably an ex expat who was sent back home because he was needed anymore in Bermuda. They could also be a caymanian guest house owner who wants to veer tourist away from Bermuda to his home.

  15. Will Deal says:

    Legalize guns.

  16. Enjoying all the “WoK off” comments. Needed that laugh this morning.
