BMDS Auditions For “All’s Well That Ends Well”

April 21, 2013

The Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society [BMDS] is holding open auditions at its Daylesford Theatre on April 30 and May 1 for an upcoming production of William Shakespare’s comedy “All’s Well That Ends Well,” a mixture of fairy tale logic, gender role reversals and cynical realism

Adapted and directed by Barabara Jones, callbacks will be on May 2.

“All are welcome at the auditions,” said a BMDS spokesman. “Shakespeare is easier and more fun than you think!”

The play will run from July 19-20 and July 23-27.

Parts for men

Bertram – a teenager or young man, an only child, he has just become Count of Rossillion following the recent and untimely death of his father. Being fatherless, he is legally the ward of the Queen of France.
Parolles – a gallant ladies man, a brave soldier, and a friend and adviser to Bertram; but it’s all a big lie.
Lafew – a favoured courtier to the Queen of France. Probably a friend of Bertram’s father. Has a twinkle in his eye.
Clown – fancies himself as a witty wordsmith. The part is doubled with 1st Soldier, an NCO who thinks he’s a bit of a wag.

Parts for women

Countess of Rossillion – Bertram’s mother; compassionate, and generous with her love but she is no fool.
Helena – an intelligent, educated woman whose inexplicable obsession with Bertram is the great mystery of the play. Perhaps her biological clock is ticking.
Queen of France – weak and seriously ill at the start, once she is cured there is no mistaking the fact that she is The Queen and she is In Charge. The part is doubled with Mariana who is the Widow’s gossipy neighbour.
Widow – runs a boarding house in Florence. The part is doubled with Attendant to the Queen – a non-speaking part but with important action.
Diana – daughter of the Widow, loves practical jokes, she is the love (lust) interest of Bertram. This part is doubled with the Duke of Florence – a female military leader.

Parts for either male or female

First Lord and Second Lord – courtiers and professional soldiers, competent and well-liked, siblings with an easy friendship to each other.
Rynaldo – Steward to the Countess, slightly pompous and pedantic, doubled with 2nd Soldier, a basic squaddie, also doubled with a Courtier, from the French Court.

Part for none of the above

Duchesse – the Duke’s pet – probably a dog but other species would be considered. Military bearing an asset.
