Justice Greaves: ‘This Is Domestic Terrorism’

April 5, 2013

Speaking at the sentencing yesterday [Apr 4] of two convicted murderers, Supreme Court Justice Carlyle Greaves spoke about the gang activities and said, “This is local domestic terrorism and must be stamped out by whatever means necessary.”

Justice Greaves then handed Jay Dill and Devon Hewey life sentences, ordering that they must serve 40 years before being eligible before parole. The two men were convicted of the premeditated murder of 22-year-old Randy Robinson on March 31 2011.

During the trial the Court heard that the defendants were members of 42, while the victim was not a gang member however had cousins that were involved with Parkside – 42′s rivals.

During the trial the Court heard that the motorcycle was being ridden by Hewey while Dill was the actual shooter. At the sentencing, Hewey’s lawyer suggested that as Dill was the actual shooter, it would be reasonable that Dill should get a longer sentence.

Justice Greaves explained why he saw no difference between what the two men did. He said that there is a particular pattern about these murders, attempted murders, and other gun incidents.

He said that in all cases there was a shooter and a cycle rider who carried the shooter; or a shooter and an assistant or assistants in a car. Always more than one person. He said, “The rider is an important component. They all have a consistent pattern. Two men on a bike – two or more in a car.”

Each man was given the opportunity to speak from the prisoner’s dock in Supreme Court, and they both claimed they were innocent. At one point in the sentencing, Dill was referred to as the shooter and muttered “bulls^&t.”

Hewey looked at Justice Greaves and said, “I don’t even know where to begin. I feel for the family. What happens if you don’t do the crime? It’s the way things are. You do what you gotta do. I feel for the family. You got the wrong two.”

Addressing the defendants and the Court, Justice Greaves said that in this case, it was gangsters against an innocent citizen who had been killed.

He said that they are saying to all the rest of us that they “the gangsters are in charge” and “if you oppose us, we can take you out.If you are related to anyone with whom we have a dispute we will take you out.”

“There is a very sinister message in that mantra,” Justice Greaves said.

He continued, “The gangsters threaten the peace, happiness, and confidence of this society. They make innocent people shudder. The message that must be sent to such assailants must be clear.”

“We will pursue you, we will catch you, we will try you, and when convicted we will impose such long sentences that you will be useless when you get out.”

Referring to Bermuda’s small area and people’s consequential inability to move away from a problem, Justice Greaves said, “This is local domestic terrorism. It must be stamped out by whatever means necessary.”

“The Courts must do their part,” Justice Greaves declared.

Finally! Now lets just make this the standard going forward.

  2. ... says:

They should be Executed plain and simple. Roughly $6.4 million will be spent on these loosers to keep them in jail for 40 years.

    • Nicky says:

Millions of dollars wasted on prisoners and the OBA has cut back on scholarhships. Seems the OBA would rather have the prisons overun with young people rather then educating them!!

    • real says:

Hey…you can’t even spell losers you idiot. You freaks that come on here and talk your bs are so judgemental, but half the time you don’t even know what the h€ll your talking about. So many innocent people are being arrested or charged with crimes they didn’t commit. Then they are sent away for long periods of time just because evil b•stards like greaves is in a bad mood on that day. Who makes him God? One day God will judge his devilish *ss and show him the same amount of mercy he has been showing so many of our black brothers he has been locking up for years. I bet greaves couldn’t even do one week in jail. He’s an ******** who abuses his power. If you have seen how he deals with females in court you would know what I mean.

      • Sorry Sir says:

In Westgate, they may learn a different meaning of “Gang bang”. lol

      • Time Shall Tell says:

You forgot last year another pair also got 40 years for the South Side Cinema shooting? New government has nothing to do with it.

  5. Timothy says:

Everybody who knows nething knows that parkside are the real terrorists, and theres only a few guys from 42 jus tryna live, and avoid being completely irradicated from the island, so dont gt it twisted.
    42s about business seen.
parksides about snitchin, and doin the — dirty work.
    42 was a economic empire.
parkside is nobody, with corrupt —’-in the broadest sense- firearms, disrupting the 42 and west empire. watch how the media will slander m.o.b. and 42 as best they can; and try as hard as they can to justify bringing in more cops.
    don’t believe me just watch

    • THE STREETS KNOW says:

Yup that’s it….. Don’t really know to much about 42 but West is a community. Those guys r all just friends from long time now. They were brought up with a Dad n Mom , some went private school n most live in a family owned home. They take good care of their kids , they cook n clean n respect elders. Just normal guys but they look out for each other n their not going to allow those disrepectful piglets (broke parkside) to come west and take over their neighborhood. They don’t go out n start trouble but if trouble starts they handle their business. SIMPLE

    • Pickup says:

Are you for real Timothy!!! Find a wall , a park, a dock, a curb or any place where grown men without jobs sit around all day and do nothing but drink and do drugs and you will find our present and future problems.

In my short ride home from work each day I see the same guys (and a few women)along North Shore at Dock Hill, and across from C-Mart in the park. Some are there wind, blow or shine – drinking and smoking!

Now, to clarify, I am not referring to the fisherman that use the dock area to clean and sell fish, I am referring to those that sit there doing nothing all day but drink beer and smoke weed.

Dock Hill used to be a place where the neighborhood families would take the kids to fish and swim. Now, these bums have taken it over, litter, curse and so on – making it so that any respectable parent wouldn’t want their children anywhere near the area and these fools – except to show their children how those that abuse drugs and alcohol waste away.

  6. nok says:

sounds good to me make it standard time in jail!!!Get rid of all of them money well spent.

  7. nok says:

money well spent if we can’t kill them like they do others.

  8. nok says:

Timothy God sees all at the end of the day it is a process of elimination.Law bidding citizen are just tired of the bs.Us law bidding citizen cannot move like how we use to because we don’t know whats going to pop off.All of them are terrorist and they ALL no to go somewhere.

  9. Timothy says:

so you say All of them, but where do you draw the line in a small country like bermuda, where the networks of friendships and relations is almost one big knot… if you adopt such an ignorant attitude, you will only add fuel to the fire of labelling young black males as thugs and give them more reasont to feel oppressed by society and internalize this thug life mentality; and everybody dresses the same, you can’t distinguish between a thug and a hipster, so wake up and look at the details; these problems have roots.

    • Pickup says:

Timothy. The same problem exists worldwide and has little to do with color. The common denominators are grown men, alcohol, drugs and doing nothing constructive with their time. “Idle minds” lead to troubled minds.

However, if you keep making an excuse as to why they do what they do(which is nothing constructive) or if you are afraid and critical of “labels” (then they will continue to drive downwards and you my friend will be the one holding them back. Because someone is young and black …they can’t be labeled when doing wrong. Both of the men in this article and those that hang out on the streets all day and night, know right from wrong, have the ability to make an honest living, and are grown men that should be held accountable for the DECISIONS THEY MAKE…good or bad!

      • Timothy says:

        To Pickup,

Regardless of if their black white brown or blue; the point that I am making is that it is not easy to distinguish between a so-called thug/criminal and a law-abiding young man; and if you try, you’re really being prejudice; you speak too generally, and you speak as if you know these two young men; someone says theyre not guilty, can you prove this wrong? if now in genereal, young males are cousins or freinds with someone who is labelled a criminal, are they then a criminal by association; can you really and truly argue that you are not networked to one of these so-called scum of the earth?
The puporse of these corrective facilities, aka prisons, is to correct behavior, bug ignorant people like you would rather have these people identify with their actions as if it somehow defines who they are; i am not making any excuses for anyone; but to try and generalize some very individual acts is just wrong, to try and label a whole generation somehow degenerate is simply wrong.
i hope you lose your job, and we’ll see what you are willing to do to maintain your lifestyle.
        Fool

  10. wow sounds good Mr Greaves!!but lets not stop there.lets also get these rapist, perverts ,child molesters and other murders out there!!

  11. W says:

Well now that they are Starting to get serious, Nobody better complain About the extra long sentences And the cost to the taxpayer And the increase in pay to the prison Staff. Right?

  12. Triangle Drifter says:

Great! Now ship them off the Island for their terms. Siberia sounds nice. I’ll be Mexico or some other 3rd world country would not mind taking them at 1/3 the price it costs to house & feed them here & still profit from the deal.

Think of it. If your sentence is more than 5 years, you are going on a trip to a not very nice place.

Want to see crime drop in a hurry?

  13. Pokey Bermudians says:

whats going to happen when they find out who the real shooter is? Is Jay going to get let off? And the police will look stupid again for capturing the wrong person. The police claim they have soo much evidence but yet the general public knows that the real shooter is off in England living his life. Jay isnt going to be a snitch and put his family nor his life at risk. Its so sad but thats just how society is. Karma is a bitch and God is always watching so sooner or later the real shooter will get a taste of his own medicine.

    • tricks are for kids says:

      Well said!!!

    • Pickup says:

If what you speak is the truth, then open your mouth and speak up! If not to a police office then call the anonymous hotline. Otherwise, you are as guilty as the murder(s) and no better. If you have information that will help identify the “real killer” and you have not presented that information to anyone, will you feel guilty when “the true killer” kills again? You should! I just hope it isn’t someone close to you or a family member. Could you live with yourself!

By the way the police won’t look stupid. They do not have a crystal ball.

    • For Real says:

Yes….yes….yes….and you know who you are….I cant see how you call hewey and jay yah boys but yet yah letting them do YOUR time….own up!!!!

  14. nuffin but da truth says:

should have been the death penalty!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Agreed, but never going to happen.

  15. Really says:

40 years that’s a lot of of cocoa pop cereals the highlight of your prison day!

  16. Malachi says:

To those who insist that the defendants are innocent and that they got the wrong guys, can we assume that you know the identity the “real” killer(s)?

If yes, then did you go to the police with this information?

    • For Real says:

Why go to the police?….do you really think they are gonna do anything about it….the justice system is curropt and should have seen that these 2 were not guilty!!!!

    • idea says:

When found guilty of crimes like this the should be given death sentence. If that was the case people would be less likely to take the rap for someone else. They MIGHT lose their life early if they talk but they WILL lose their life early if they don’t. Even if a few people still willing to do that the supply of those willing would drop. Plus save the $80,000+ each year.

  17. nok says:

Pokey Bermudians the police should track you down n question you cause you seem to know so much.I trust that you called in and gave the authoties the correct info that you know!I would assume not I am glad they are gone 2 less fools on the streets!

  18. Free Spirit says:

The only thing I can honestly say is, – will never understand why anyone would have such low regard to their own lives and others by having info that could save their lives and others and not say anything. They say they don’t nitch and that they are showing solidarity but (come on now) evey rule, law, or command has it’s limits. Especially if it is morally and spiritually correct.

  19. Raymond Ray says:

Justice Greaves, on behalf of many others I want to thank you for “taking the bull by the horns” I vividly recall coming-up being told, “if I don’t listen…then I must feel” Now they will feel, I’m sure. By the way, serve them right!
They should feel “blessed for the Laws not permitting the Courts to sentence them to death…God forgives, but the Courts shoudn’t.

  20. nasty system says:

The system is so f$%^ up I see the guy that they had lockup for a murder is out walking the streets. Another Parkside Prick gets off while all the 42 guys either gets murder of Jail for life & nothing being done. F&^& off all u nasty bad minded people who are setting up these guys.
