Video: Navy Aircraft Diverts After Engine Failure

May 29, 2013

[Updated with video] Emergency personnel rushed to the airport this afternoon [May 29] after a U.S. navy plane notified Bermuda that they would be diverting to the island to make an emergency landing as one engine had failed.

At least two fire vehicles could be seen on the runway, and police officers were restricting traffic in the area.

BFRS Lieutenant Jay Donawa said that it was not commercial airline, but a US Navy P-3 Orion with approximately 15 people onboard.

He said the pilot called in and asked for assistance. The plane had lost power in the #4 engine, and had approximately six hours of fuel left.

Local personnel provided a standby response, and the aircraft landed safely at 4.05pm. Three commercial flights were delayed as a result of the emergency landing.

take off and landings till late in the night with engine run ups after midnight some times! Met some good people from NAS Bermuda over the years, kinda brought back a lot of memories seeing the P3 land. Glad all are safe!!!

I am guessing the engine started back up again as all four were operating on landing and taxi.

    • Just routine for a Navy Pilot says:

The pilot said he lost “POWER” in #4. The engine could still idle but not a CRUISING RPM’s. The Pilot could have throttled the engine down to prevent any further damage. A Full engine shut down is the last resort and as that would put further stress on the remaining engines and the airframe.

      • James Goodfellow says:

Yes so the engine was operating.

  4. Garbage says:

Bermuda has not had any plan crashes in my life time and dont need none

    • Yes I says:

Don’t worry Garbage, an airplane like this wont crash due to a single engine malfunction.

    • Next time, go have cocktails in Hamilton says:

You have a point! Garbage! Not many people remember the mission of these aircraft. Currently, these upgraded models carrying 20,000 lbs of ordnance including AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER missiles and Mk54 torpedos. I won’t want to be at at the airport if one did indeed crash even with all the weapon fail safes.

    Glad all were ok
