The Bermuda women’s football team claimed the gold medal in the NatWest Island Games on Thursday night [July 18], with the game going down to the wire with a sudden death penalty shootout.

Bermuda’s starting line-up was Stacy Babb, Waynesha Bean, Cheyra Bell, Witnae Duerr, Kashintae Fox, Akeyla Furbert, Jessica Furtado, Dominique Richardson, Teara Thomas, Tschana Wade and Leanne Yates.

Neither team scored in regulation time, so the match went into overtime, which also ended with a score of 0-0, sending the match into penalties.

After Bermuda missed the first penalty, players from both sides kept converting, until Bermuda’s goalkeeper Stacy Babb made two key saves giving Bermuda the win.

Within seconds the team, and many fans, rushed the field and hugged Babb as the celebrations began as Bermuda claimed one of their two gold medal wins in football. Video of the penalty shootout can be viewed here.
