Video: Roban On Charity Status Being Revoked

July 27, 2013

The Committee of 25 for Handicapped Children and the African Diaspora Heritage Trail Foundation [ADHT] have had their charitable status revoked, and Shadow of Home Affairs Minister Walter Roban says it’s “not clear why.”

“We hope that the Government and the Minister of Home Affairs who is responsible for charities, and the Charities Commission come forth with more information that can be helpful to the public to understand as to why this has happened,” said Mr Roban.

Earlier this month Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy said registered charities are required to submit a copy of their financial statements to the Registrar General within 6 months of the end of each financial year. As of June 2013 there were 373 registered charities, and 50 of them have not provided their financial statements since 2010.

“The Charity Commissioners have taken the view that those that do not comply by the deadline without good reason will have their registration cancelled,” said Minister Fahy in the Senate earlier this month.

The Committee of 25 for Handicapped Children is reported to have lost its status as it failed to provide audited financial statements.

Government has not responded to our request for clarification, however we will update as able.

  1. “The Charity Commissioners have taken the view that those that do not comply by the deadline without good reason will have their registration cancelled,” said Minister Fahy in the Senate earlier this month. No more needs to be said. PLP did very little about Charities who did not comply with the laws that PLP passed. Shows once again that PLP were all about passing laws to look good, with virtually no intention of actual enforcement. Glad to see new Charities Commission are enforcing our laws. Question is are the other 48 charities compliant or are there more suspensions coming?

Thanks for calling, “a spade a spade”,Sanity Clause. In reality, there isn’t anymore needed to be said…

  2. Betsy T says:

I’m certainly glad it wasn’t just the African Dispora one shut down or someone would have called the race card fer sure.

  3. d.o. says:

Sorry to see it but it had to happen. There is no excuse a charity of repute couldn’t abide by the law.

  4. Alvin Williams says:

The African Dispora trail foundation was an important link to the black
aspect of history in this country and there in lay it’s great value in seeing to it that the Black Bermudian is not left out of the story of Bermuda. But than this is a on going lesson for the black community as a
whole; for we can not depend on others to tell others to tell our historical story. You would have thought that those black Bermudians who
sit in the government cabinet would have seen the value of a institution
that tells the full story of Bermuda’s history; but than too many black
Bermudians do not have a free black mind; but rather are satisfied to remain a European clone.

    • Ringmaster says:

A poignant and what should be a resonant message from Alvin. It takes effort to do things rather than sit back and let others do the work. The more the black community let matters slide and not move to support and highlight their proud heritage and history the worse it becomes.

    • Kickin says:

So Alvin, what your saying is that this charity, because of its ties to the black community should not abide by he law.? What about the Committie of 25?

l In that case, why should I license my car? Pay my land tax? Just because the previous government allowed the llaws to be skirted doesn’t mean the law shouldn’t be adhered to.

Now of we can just get all people owing taxes to pay up…

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

Yea the whole time we hear the PLP say we follow the rule of law guess they did not mean the “law” must have been some sort of thing where only some people need to follow the law and not others and there in lies the rub and the room for all those coruption charges…………..

        LOL

  5. Sandy Bottom says:

Why did Roban bother with this comment?

What a lightweight waste of space he is.

  6. nomoremoney says:

Committee of 25 certainly didn’t act like a charity, happy to see them get sanctioned. They are probably one of, if not the most wealthy charity groups. Its a fiefdom for a few.
Just consider they were given a building which has remained mostly empty since it was built, losing them hundreds of thousands of dollars because they were to greedy for high rents. Sadly the beneficiaries are the ones losing out in the end.

  7. Memory says:

Sadly, there are too many comments posted without FACTS. PLease people stop spouting so much ignorance based upon your own personal issues.

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

Yes please tell Roban to bring out the whole truth of the matter instead of hime trying to make it sound like a race thing again.

      LOL
