Shonté Campbell Awarded KPMG Scholarship

August 13, 2013

This year’s KPMG Scholarship has been awarded to Shonté Campbell, who is currently a Junior at Wofford College in South Carolina, USA, pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.

The scholarship is awarded by the Managing Directors of KPMG in Bermuda and is given to a Bermudian student committed to a career as a Chartered Professional Accountant – or Certified Public Accountant. It is valued at $20,000, per annum for each of the next three years.

Aside from her academic successes, Shonté has been heavily involved in sports, as both an elite football player and accredited football coach. As a player, she is currently a member of her university’s Women’s Soccer team, the Wofford Terriers, and has been a member of the squad since 2011.

Locally, Shonté captained the U17 Bermuda National Women’s team in both 2007 and 2008, having played All Star Soccer from 2004-2008. In January 2013 she received her Soccer Coaching Certification from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, with the intent of utilising it to give back to Bermuda at the local football level, as a coach of the Western Stars Football Club. While pursuing her studies however, Shonté is currently a volunteer coach for the Carolina Elite Soccer Academy.

Shonté is equally involved in community activities off the pitch, working with special needs children through the Miracle League; donating time and efforts to Habitat for Humanity; the local soup kitchen; as a volunteer in a local Gardening programme; and as a Nursing home assistant.

Shonté commented, “I am extremely excited, shocked, and grateful to have been chosen as the recipient of KPMG’s Scholarship winner this year. I feel tremendously blessed to be the recipient because there were plenty of other worthy candidates. My gratitude and excitement is more than I can put into words, but I am happy that I was chosen and I look forward to proving to the selection committee that I am a good choice.

“Having this scholarship will do more than just allow me to finish my undergrad in the US; it opens the door for intern opportunities which will help with gaining experience. That experience will be very useful in the future when I hope to join the CPA programme, upon completing the required hours, at KPMG. Knowing that KPMG has a programme in place to assist me in my career path to obtain my CPA is very comforting.”

The KPMG Scholarship provides financial assistance to students towards the completion of an undergraduate degree and Shonté was selected after detailed review by the Scholarship Committee. Over 55 applications were reviewed this year, with a third of the candidates progressing to the interview stage. When reviewing the applications and assessing the candidates, the Committee focuses on academic achievement, personality, leadership and involvement in the community.

Steve Woodward, Managing Director, KPMG in Bermuda said: “The Managing Directors of KPMG in Bermuda are proud to award this scholarship to Shonté. She has proven herself an excellent candidate across all facets of our selection criteria and a standout amongst the other very talented applicants.

“The KPMG Scholarship is an important aspect of our active Graduate programme, providing local students with financial assistance, on-the-job training and mentoring to further their education as they pursue their undergraduate degrees and look to embark on a career in the accountancy profession.”
