215 Free Haircuts At Back To School Event

September 4, 2013

Caines Brothers Productions and 5 Star Barbershop hosted a back to school “give back” event and offered free complimentary haircuts on Wednesday [Sept 4] for school aged boys 4-18 years old.

5 Star Barbershop, located at 68 King Street, donated their time and talents to provide complimentary haircuts to families with school-aged boys who were in need of a clean, fresh look to start the new school year.

A total of 215 boys received a free haircut throughout the day that started with a line of approximately forty forming outside the establishment by 7.45am.

245 book bags valued at $50 each were also distributed and included school supplies and other giveaways. The organisers thanked sponsors Digicel, Alpha Phi Alpha, Premier Tickets, Brown & Co, Phoenix Stores, AF Smith, Security Associates Limited and a number of members of the public for their support.

Dwayne Caines said, “The boys were treated to snacks throughout the day along with water and juice to keep them hydrated as many were waiting in the hot sun.

“So many [too numerous to mention] donated food, supplies, water, juice, and funds to ensure the day was a success. It was an awesome sight watching people in the community dropping off goods for the event.

“We are also thankful to all of the volunteers who came to assist; serving food, preparing bags, cleaning up, serving food or just being a pair of hands simply helping.

“Lastly, we want to thank the barbers who worked all day, most without taking a break and we are truly grateful”.

    • Support Bermudians says:

      Proud to be Bermudian?

Do you know how many of those Barbers are actually Bermudian? Find out before you switch.

      Support your own!

      • Winnie Dread says:

Hmmm I wonder of the 250 boys that had a haircut, how many were actually Bermudian, get my point bro/sis cynicism and negetivity will never get us anywhere.

  8. Vote for Me says:

Another excellent example of how a village can help to raise a child. Well done to all!!

If my calculations are correct, that is a total of $16,550 in donations for the day, not including food, water and volunteer time!!!

Interesting to see that the Barber shop will get at least one new customer as a result of their kind gesture.

Now for the broader community… what can we do to continue the example??

    • Great job Caines Brothers Productions and 5 Star Barbershop .This is the true spirit of helping others!!Many thanks and God bless..

  9. SoMuchMore says:

    well done to all involved.

  10. This event was such a blessing in so many ways that are to numerous to count, but in reality if we look at 215 free hair cuts and how much it would have cost for these barbers to charge each customer, then they would have made a bundle.

So I say in return we honor these young men and those behind the scenes that made it all become as successful as it was, there was snacks with water and juices, then there was food that was supplied from local restaurants and I believe the supermart food court and Mr.Chicken, that supplied lunch for children and parents alike.

This is a marvelous idea and I commend 5 star barber shop and it’s barbers and the Caines brothers who we know is Bermuda through and through and their work speaks for it’s self. my prayer is the things we see openly before you today would reap many benefits of blessings far beyond that which was given out, the volunteers that gave of their time to give out the digicel school bags and supplies was a great blessing to so many and the timing of it all was perfect, and as two of the Caines brothers stated to God be all the glory.

    • Raymond Ray says:

I concur with you Duane, this had been a blessing to numerous families in these trying times…Thanks again to all that had taken part of this heart warming event:-)

  11. DC says:

It never ceases to amaze me in what “We the People” can do!!!!! Outstanding!!! All it takes, anything for that matter, is COMMITMENT! It’s not necessary to wait to do the RIGHT thing – Just Do It!!!!

  12. RME says:

We waited 2 hours to get my son’s hair cut but in the end had to leave because my daughter wasn’t feeling well and I couldn’t wait any more.
However we were extremely grateful for the food, juice, snacks and gym bag we received while waiting in line.

So my son’s hair still needs to be done. I will have to pay for it and I’m okay with that. I’ve decided that instead of taking him to his usual barber I am going back to 5-Star tomorrow and have it done there – as a THANK YOU to these men who gave so sacrificially. And as someone said above, we may just become regular customers from now on.

May the blessings come back to them a hundredfold!

    • Mike Hind says:

      RME,
Send me an email at uncleelvis(at)rocketmail.com, with your son’s name and, when you guys go in, his haircut will be paid for.

  13. Medellin says:

Dear Dwayne, Wayne, 5 Star Barbershop and All who contributed,

Thank you for all demonstrating today that Bermuda is not lost and still has a big heart and the ability for ordinary Citizens to simply do good things.

No politicking, no fanfare, no drama, just efficient organisation to benefit our neighbours, who needed assistance.

Fantastic job and also thanks to the Web Critics (or Bloggers) for deciding not to tear down today’s success with their customary negative posts.

    Sincerely
    Medellin

    • Concerned Citizen says:

Congrats to the organizers, excellent effort. @ Medellin, I TOTALY AGREE regarding negative comments and politicking……….sooooooooo, why was Premier Craig there when the press was present to hand out what looked like 1 case of water out of GP1? I don’t think the Caines brothers or the Barbers needed the photo op Premier to pimp the occasion. Let the men do their community work and receive the praise they deserve. Craig……well…..SMH!

      • Ging ding says:

Thank you for making the point about negative posts… by making a negative post.

  14. john silvester says:

    Job well done.
At one point I saw Dunkley’s drop off some water when they heard they had run out.
The individual who donated it, Mr. PAUL SPRING, insisted that there was no reason to mention them since it was a donation. I am sorry, but if these acts of kindness go without reporting it is a disserice to the generosity for those who support our own young men. I only saw this act but I know another individual who sells bread and cookies (baked items) who was so touched that she went home and donated 20 + schoolbags etc…

She would never let me hear the end of it if I put her name, Lucy Johnson!

Will this fix all our ills? No, but it is a step in the right direction.

Great job men and women of Bermuda!

  15. Kathy S. says:

Well done! A wonderful heart warming gesture shown today. I’m sure those who attended have shown sincere gratitude and not just greed.

My son went by to get his hair cut but he opted to let someone that really needed it to go instead.

He was also just happy to see the all the young boys n even some teens his age there all getting along.

    Well done to all!

  16. Moonbeam says:

–a gift straight from the heart! Bless you all – for your contributions and for creating a novel way to contribute to the community !

  17. Dennis says:

    Simply “AWESOME”

  18. Tricks Are For Kids says:

    One Word………AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Tired says:

These are the kind of things that bring tears to your eyes. God will continue to Bless all that had a part in this. If I had sons, I would definetly be taking them to this barbershop.

  20. Proud Mommy says:

Job well done! my son and I got there 8:40am and the atmosphere was AWESOME. although there was a wait, it was well worth it! My son is in the above picture and he was grateful to receive this honest gesture.

Thanks to everyone involved our young men will go back to school looking “fresh”

  21. sage says:

No fanfare?Every’news’outlet publicized the event, the school supplies were an excellent idea ,free haircuts not so much, can’t people cut their own children’s hair anymore,or just grow dreads and save thousands over the years. These poor children, who didn’t have much hair to start with, looked like they were being processed for prison, the way those barbers scraped their heads. One freebie = customer for life.

  22. Come On Man says:

I have one question. How many of those who got free hair cuts were wearing Nike sneakers and expensive jeans.

  23. buzz says:

@ Sage are you Suggesting,,that there is motive bhind This,,MMmmm !

  24. Yes I says:

Reading this shows an essence of Bermuda that has been overshadowed by the topic of the day. Not being there my comment is limited to saying “Thanks for reaching out to the community”.

The picture shows many women accompanying these young men. I sure hope the ratio was evenly divided with Fathers bringing their sons to the event.

  25. Come On Man says:

    @buz there’s a motive for everything.

  26. For Sure says:

@ come on man: you make a great point.

  27. Come On Man says:

@SAGE: You make a good point. There’s a motive for everything.

  28. buzz says:

@ For Sure,,, what do you think it is !

    • Come On Man says:

I think free advertising. Media attention. There is such a thing called a media w***e.

  29. The Motive is Clear to Me says:

To all those that believe that there was an ulterior motive or other intent behind this, I feel compassion for you. Why? Because the motivation here is simply God. And if you know God, you will know what it means and how it feels to give selflessly. I understand why this act or this occurrence is incomprehensible to you. And to that end, I ask that we all pray for each other to find the peace and the tranquility that allows one to give of them self with no expectations of repayment.

    • Impressive says:

ohh you sound privy to the actual intent.. are you one of the organizers or are you just assuming, just like some are assume that there is a motive behind it.. its a wonderful gesture and I am happy for the community, but considering the support by the media, the presence of the premier and others, the presence of bbc, it does seem a bit much.

  30. Impressive says:

it was a wonderful idea and i am sure that many parents appreciated the help. In these times, people need help and its good to see some members of the community doing their part.. my concern is the motive behind the help, considering the members of this group have been involved in politics, but at the end of the day its a good thing, and only the father up above knows the real intention of someone’s heart.

  31. God 1st says:

    Concerned Citizen

Congrats to the organizers, excellent effort. @ Medellin, I TOTALY AGREE regarding negative comments and politicking……….sooooooooo, why was Premier Craig there when the press was present to hand out what looked like 1 case of water out of GP1? I don’t think the Caines brothers or the Barbers needed the photo op Premier to pimp the occasion. Let the men do their community work and receive the praise they deserve. Craig……well…..SMH! LMFAO !!! You have sapoken of facts.

  32. eyeking says:

good work guys /bless your heart for all the hard work and effort you put to the table . .. we need more men like this around.

  33. black men says:

My brother in-law is a barber at 5 Star cuts, I had my doubts about the Caines twins until I saw them work. They came at first thing in the morning and they left when it was done, they swept, lifted, the give out food and candy. If it was the media then I was fooled. I saw them when everyone was gone. they were working flat out. My hats off to the barbers and the Caines brothers job well done.

  34. wow says:

I was watching from the window of my office all day, I was taken back by the dedication of the men envolved. The twins, and other men were in the sun all day and I know the barbers were woring hard inside. What one my co-workers (expatriates) stated was ” athey were so comfortable with these young men”. One of the other ladies in my office were moved to tears. she did not know the need was so great. As a woman in buisness it was nice to see our men being compassionate. When I saw the coments about people questioning the motives. I had to speak from the perspective of someone who was looking out of my window all day, these guys never took a break, they works their hands to the bones. I dont know why they did it, I am just glad they did!
