Entries Open For 2014 Building Design Awards

November 26, 2013

The Bermudian magazine announced a call for entries to the 2014 Building Design Awards. The awards, now in their 20th year, celebrate Bermuda’s architectural excellence and are the only one of their kind in Bermuda.

All local architects, draftsmen, designers and developers are invited to submit their projects by Monday January 6th, 2014.

The winners will be announced in the spring issue of The Bermudian magazine published in March and an awards presentation is planned at Bermuda Gas’ showroom at that time.

“We are grateful to Bermuda Gas for sponsoring the awards again this year and look forward to celebrating all the winners in the spring.”

“We trust that our support for the Building Design Awards will demonstrate the value we place on architectural achievements in the commercial and residential sectors and we encourage all eligible participants to submit entries,” states Bermuda Gas General Manager, Judith Uddin.

  1. JUNK YARD DOG says:

What are you give out awards for ?

Are you patting your selves on your backs again ?.

I have not seen any domestic building constructed over the past forty or is it fifty years which i would consider note worthy.

However I have notice a departure from our Traditional Bermuda Architecture.

The Cities Architecture should not look like Bermuda cottages . However ! what I see lacks balance and proportion and at best could be perceived as jumble of compromises.

Bermuda at one time could be proud of its unique and one of a kind architecture as countries like Japan and Spain are proud of theirs , today as you drive from one end to the other you are treated to vast quantities of Florida “look a likes”.

Many of you will say its my money and I will build what I want and like. I will say you deserve what you get, so paint it green, if pleases you.

Today’s so called modern house concept usually sports a 7 on 12 Bermuda slate roof which is is doomed to failure. Hey ! don’t you know the roof slate cracks under its own weight.

To the Judges of the competition

When we build , let us think that
    we build forever. Let
it not be for present delight nor
present use alone. Let it be
    such work as our descendants
will thank us for;and let us
think, as we lay stone on stone,
that a time is to come when
those stones will be held sacred
    because our hands have toughed
    them, and men will say.as
they look upon the the labor and
wrought substance of them . “See!
this our father did for us . ”
