BELCO: Trim Trees To Avoid Power Outages

March 27, 2014

This week’s high winds resulted in scattered power outages across the Island, including outages caused by foliage coming into contact with overhead lines.

As vegetation is especially lush this spring, BELCO said they wish to remind property owners that now is the time to trim trees and other foliage, so that they are at least 10 feet away from overhead lines.

A spokesperson said, “Please don’t wait until hurricane season starts on 1st June to trim your trees.

“If foliage is dangerously close to overhead lines, please call BELCO a week or more in advance of your scheduled landscaping [three weeks is preferable].

“BELCO will arrange for a planned power outage, so that your landscapers can work safely. Please note: Property owners are responsible for foliage on their property.

“BELCO is responsible for foliage along mainline circuits [which roughly equate to main roads]. BELCO contracts with certified horticultural professionals Brown and Company Ltd., year-round to maintain vegetation along mainline circuits Island-wide.”

We need a P(3) to put all power, phone and cable lines underground.

  2. Y-Gurl says:

How about BELCO trimming their rates, they are way higher than any tree I’ve seen

  3. Raymond Ray says:

How about Govt. contracting the work out to private landscapers; let them do the work and then charge the property owners for the labour?

    • Micro says:

BELCO should be doing that if its allowed; if it isn’t they should put that in place, tack on the charges to the property owners power bill!

If they don’t already do so, I’d say they should be charging the owner for repair work when overgrown trees on their property cause damage the grid as well.
