Marc Bean: ‘Not Transparency Or Openness’

March 7, 2014

“After being directed by the Speaker of the House to answer these questions, Premier Cannonier refused to do so, under the grounds of refusing to prejudice himself ,” which is not “accountability, transparency, or openness,” Opposition Leader Marc Bean said today.

The questions, posed this morning [Mar 7] in the House of Assembly by MP David Burt, started off a discussion abour the matter of sub judice that lasted over 30 minutes, with Attorney-General Mark Pettingill and Shadow Attorney-General Kim Wilson both putting forward their points.

Mr. Bean said, “It is clear by his actions that Premier Cannonier has no regard for the rules of the House of Assembly, the rulings of the Speaker, and by extension the people of Bermuda.

“This morning, in the House of Assembly, Premier Cannonier was asked the following questions:

“1] Will the Honourable Premier please inform this Honourable House if he and any of the Principals of Landow & CO. Builders [Bethesda, MD] have met, spoken via telephone, or corresponded via email, since his Personal Explanation given to this Honourable House on May 31, 2013.

“2] Will the Honourable Premier please confirm to this Honourable House if the “Exchange of Information” trip to Washington DC, detailed in his Personal Explanation of May 31, 2013, was the first time the Honourable Premier had met any of the Principals of Landow & CO. Builders [Bethesda, MD].

“After being directed by the Speaker of the House to answer these questions Yes or No, Premier Cannonier refused to do so, under the grounds of refusing to prejudice himself.

“This is not accountability, transparency, or openness. It is cowardice, arrogance, and contempt for the people of Bermuda at the highest level.

“The Premier may fear incriminating himself, but no matter how much he attempts to hide the truth it will inevitably be revealed.”

  1. LiarLiar says:

Cannonier should answer the questions IMO.

Just like Marc Bean should answer the questions regarding his SDO decisions (while Minister of Environment) for Spice Hill and Marc Daniels’ property on Spring Benny.

If you truly want transparency and accountability then practice what you preach.

    • Independent says:

      @ LiarLiar,

I suggest someone ask Mr.Bean. I haven’t seen him pulling to many punches of late, so you should get an answer. lol

      • Speak Truth says:

Well said Mr Bean. This government has lost my respect. Failure to Answers Questions only point to one thing “OBA have much to hide”.

This morning the Credibility of the Premier was weaken even more.

Seems as if a few have been sleeping. Mr Bean answered all Questions in regards to Spice Hill, as well as Mr Daniels. So stop attempting to deflect and tell the OBA to hold true to their promise of TRANSPARENCY.

TRANSPARENCY ACCOUNTABILITY HONESTY from the OBA IS WHAT I VOTED FOR, and today I see none and this has ticked me off.

        • Hmmm says:

          Oh no he didn’t

        • LiarLiar says:

          Betty,

This Government never had your respect so how in the world can you have lost it in the first place?

And don’t think for a minute you are fooling anyone when you change your alias and computers as your writing style does not change. On top of that this particular Bernews avatar was used when you posted under the pseudonym “Standing Strong for Transparency, Accountability yada yada blah blah.’

Mr. Bean’s answers to those SDO questions were that he wasn’t going to answer them while the recipient of one of those SDOs threatened legal action against reporters. So I guess by your above logic the reason for the non-answers is that ‘he has much to hide.’

          • Kangoocar says:

@liarliar, never be surprised at the levels betty will sink too!! She is a joke!!

          • BETTTY TRUMP says:

I wish I did think to say what “Speak the Truth” has outlined. I agree with that individual. WELL SAID WELL SAID @speak the truth. The fact remains we have a government whom promised me on the door step that they would do the following:

            1. DO POLITICS DIFFERENTLY
            2. TRANSPARENCY, HONESTY, ACCOUNTABILITY

So far I have NOT seen any of these things come knocking on my door.

This is a government that has fallen on their sword, and now are using all kinds of political strategies to save their own butts…such as suggesting the PLP is out to do treason..>REALLY

            • Loving Togetherness says:

Well said Mr. Bean I do hope the Premier will stand up and be honest. I am surprise at his actions as I did see him in a different light prior to this situation, but that is now slowly changing.

I recall you and Mr Daniels also addressed all Questions in regards to the Spice Valley issue. Some folks just want to overlook it. One only needs to do a little quick research and they will find it. It was never hidden it was put out there for the public to see all.

I think Speak truth might be right, is it merely a deflection by the OBA supporters and MPs.

              • Betty Dump says:

Dang Betty! How many usernames do you have? You can’t hide your piss poor 3rd grade grammar usage.

        • nuffin but the truth says:

the failed and defunct plp have lost everyone’s respect

          • BETTTY TRUMP says:

TELL your Premier and the JETGATE $ stop hiding behind Lawyers, making them richers, and JUST ANSWER the QUESTIONS and be HONEST to the people of Bermuda, that way we can make real head-way forward…really…

          • Robert says:

            Not everybody

    • tricks are for kids says:

This article is about the Premieres refusal to answer questions poised to HIM, not about Mark Bean……….STOP doing that!!! There are even OBA supporters that want answers…….EVERY SINGLE TIME a question is asked (without being answered) the defence of SOME OBA supporters is “Oh well….blah ..blah blah….., or there is a personal attack on the person asking the question….
      #SMH….#enoughisenough….#kindergartenantics,…..

  2. Hmmm says:

BEAN …Spice Valley. The truth please

  3. Hmmm says:

BEAN . Who are the beneficiaries of the Trust for the Dame Lois Brown … building

    • Uncle Bob says:

      The OBA….duh

No one in the OBA spits truth

You UBA/oba supporters are so in love with Hypocrisy…smh

As Beyonce would sing….Drunk In Love with Hypocrisy!!

      • Mike Hind says:

        Be honest.

        It’s both sides.

Don’t try to play like the PLP and their supporters aren’t hypocrites, too.

        Try an ounce of honesty.

    • Pebblebeach says:

Now that is a great question we have been seeking an answer to for years.

  4. Terry says:

    The plot thickens.
All we need now is for Comrade Marxist Starling to que in.

    Crimea anyone?

  5. Coffee says:

Why did Cannonier plead the fifth ? I submit that there is something he don’t want Nobody to know about !

    • Hmmm says:

      which minister are you?

      • Coffee says:

I’m glad that you asked . I’m the Minister of the Diaspora , responsible for the identification of persons , families , corporations and trust who continue by any means necessary to attempt to dismiss their liability to compensate or make reparations for the stolen , kidnapped and displaced peoples of Africa . Do you need to see me ?
Now if your answer is ‘ your people did it ‘ they were the ones who sold you . I say , FOR YOUR BENEFIT and persuasion . So come see me soon so that you could be struck off the list . Like the Jews we also have a list .

      • Just Wondering says:

Doesn’t matter the truth is he is correct, why hasn’t Premier answered these quesions.

Also I found the use of the word preduice odd and double checked its meaninng.

        prej·u·dice
        [ préjjədiss ]

1.opinion formed beforehand: a preformed opinion, usually an unfavorable one, based on insufficient knowledge, irrational feelings, or inaccurate stereotypes
2.holding of ill-informed opinions: the holding of preformed opinions based on insufficient knowledge, irrational feelings, or inaccurate stereotypes
3.irrational dislike of somebody: an unfounded hatred, fear, or mistrust of a person or group, especially one of a particular religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexual preference, or social status

If this was the word the Premier said then well he has already prejudiced himself.

    • LiarLiar says:

Probably in light of the on-going legal proceedings underway.

But I have to ask if it is revealed that the discussions with the developer have been ongoing what exactly would the problem be? Those are pretty basic and generic queries. What would they accomplish except for the fact that the Government has been in discussions with a potential developer. Isn’t that how it is supposed to happen especially due to the fact that it will be public land that is to be developed?

A more relevant question would be did you receive any gifts from this developer. Marc bean has stated publicly the Premier told him of a bribe offer that he did NOT accept. What is wrong with that?

Do you think that the public knew of every conversation that took place between Government and Bazarian when Club Med was signed over to his failed development company? Did you know of the Sardis Development Ltd that just announced today their purchase of Pink Beach Club? If not, do you think that transaction was also shady and somehow underhanded?

  6. larry says:

Idoits! Who in there right mind would want to visit this island after watching you people act like 12 year olds? Grow up!

  7. watching says:

Why would Cannonier run and hide if he didn’t have anything to hide? Obviously he does.
But in this case he defied the Speaker of the House.
    The Governor should intercede.

    • Truth Tells says:

“The Governor should intercede…?” Really? Talk us through how that works in your little green mind?

    • Really? says:

Seriously. At least when good old Ewart pulled a fast one on the public he had the guts to come out and openly admit “we had to deceive you”.

  8. Jonny rocket says:

the oba government has just shown me what I always felt about all government parties. No matter what party is the government of the day, none of them ever put the ppl 1st, conduct honest business without hidden agendas or show transparency to the people they serve.

  9. Nothinaboutnothin says:

There are Bermudians that have lost jobs this week and there are more to follow.

These Bermudians have homes and families. There is limited positions now that many of these roles have been outsourced to Poland and other countries because the cost for those services is cheaper. Instead of creating scandals or carrying on a witch hunt of the Premier ask questions about jobs and try to brainstorm about how we can create jobs for Bermudians. We are tired and disgusted of these attempts to discredit each other.

I really don’t care who was on the plane, I don’t care when the Premier talked to a potential investor of Bermuda. I really don’t. What I do care about is how my friend will pay her mortgage and feed children now that she has lost her job.

That’s what’s up! BTW I was a PLP voter and now just sick and tired! Won’t be voting for you again, thought we were going to be better than this!

    • nuffin but the truth says:

your friend will have to learn the same way 1000′s of others have had to learn…it’s always the same with the ones that have a job UNTIL they lose it…they don’t give a dam about anyone else but when it happens to them,oh yes,it’s different then!

what’s that saying Bermudians love to throw about…oh yeah..
      What goes round…blah blah blah.

  10. ganja mon says:

We need to do away with Party politics because the PLP seem to only care about themselves and their smear campaign. They are not putting Bermuda first but are only out to destroy what good things the OBA are trying to do just to get back in power…in 3 years.

    • BETTTY TRUMP says:

WHY, because the UBPoba are failing at their buzz words of TRANSPARENCY< HONESTY< ACCOUNTABILTY SO now the UBPoba Fan club want this matter shut down as fast as possible. Lets not talk about it, because the UBPOba did it…REALLY …HYPOCRITICAL …for real…

      • Mike Hind says:

Appropriate that you show up after a post about a smear campaign…

      • Ganja mon says:

You want to talk about transparency? How did that irghers situation play out again?? Or how about the missing 800million that was spent??

  11. Kangoocar says:

Seriously plper’s, when are you guys going to understand that this whole mess is now in the hands of the courts?? All the truth will come out then, so let’s stop wasting time on your petty stuff, but while we are at it, beany should answer the questions he has been mute about for years, and that would be the spice hill and Marc Daniels stuff, being their is no ongoing court case about those things!!!!

    • watching says:

The questions about jet gate have nothing to do with the accusations from Burt and Bean. Unless they do.

    • Dragging A Lure says:

Stand Your Ground Man, why don’t someone on the OBA ask a parliamentary question? Demand that your representative pose the question.

  12. Argosy says:

….never heard a peep out of the PLP when “plantation questions” were not answered. Hypocrites. Guess the phrase “sub judice” is not in the Bermudian vocab and definitely not in the Air Traffic Control Specialist’s handbook!!

  13. sml says:

    “Rat Race”
Political voilence fill ya city, Uh! Ya too rude!
Uh! Eh! What a rat race!
    Oh, what a rat race!
This is the rat race! Rat race!
    Oh what a Rat race!
    Oh, it’s a disgrace
    To see the human-race
In a rat race, rat race!
    You got the horse race;
    You got the dog race;
    You got the human-race;
But this is a rat race, rat race!

  14. Lone Wolf says:

    C’mon folks. Keep it real.

I agree with coffee this time. Why didn’t he just answer the questions? Running from them only makes him look guilty. He even had a preview of the questions yesterday! His writers had a lot of time to spin something for him to read out. Did they fall asleep too early last night or something?

When will people realize that if you tell one lie, you have to keep lying to support that original lie and you just dig yourself deeper and deeper and deeper into the hole.

I wish SOMEONE in these parties would just speak the truth for ONCE! Anyone from either party!!

Here’s the deal, whichever politician tells the truth first … I will vote for your party in the next election.

  15. MAKE MY DAY says:

As I recall… The PLP had a 14 yr long history of cowardice, arrogance, and contempt for the people of Bermuda at the highest level!! PERIOD!!!

    • Senior says:

This Premier is a disgrace – and he demonstrates this by lying, constantly ducking questions and trying to change the focus at every turn – his arrogance is more than annoying! And OBA supporters defend him by giving a history lesson on what the PLP did. Lying and cheating is wrong and there is no defence for this by making comparisons. The sooner we see the back of this man, the better off Bermuda will be.
