Royal Caribbean Cruise Employment Opportunity

March 12, 2014

The Ministry of Home Affairs announced today [Mar 12] that it will be hosting an employment orientation session on March 26 and 27 for those interested in working in the cruise line industry.

Last year, the Ministry partnered with Norwegian Cruise Lines [NCL] to introduce an employment opportunity which afforded Bermudians a chance to work on board one of NCL’s ships.

The initiative was a pledge from the 2013 Throne Speech. And as a result of the recruitment drive last year, seven Bermudians secured jobs on board NCL ships.

This year, the Ministry said they are “proud to partner with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines [RCCL] to continue its pledge of providing employment opportunities for Bermudians.”

Positions available include, but are not limited to:

  • Cooks
  • Bar Servers
  • Bartenders
  • Waiter Servers
  • Stateroom Attendants

The Ministry said, “Later this month, representatives from RCCL’s Human Resources Office will be on-Island to provide an overview of the jobs available, outline the criteria for prospective applicants, review employment applications and commence the interview process.

“The employment briefings take place March 26 & 27 at Pier Six [lower cruise ship terminal] from 10.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m. both days, with the interview sessions taking place the following day on March 27.”

Today the Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy said, “The public will recall that when I originally announced the cruise ship employment initiative in March 2013, I stated at the time that we were actively working with our cruise partners to establish a local employment office liaison relationship with a view to securing employment opportunities across all professions with those cruise companies that service Bermuda. Last year, we partnered with Norwegian Cruise Lines and had some success with seven Bermudians obtaining jobs with the cruise line.

“This year, we are delighted to continue this unique employment opportunity by partnering with RCCL. And I am encouraging any Bermudian who is interested in working in the hospitality industry and who is keen to embark on an adventure of a lifetime, to attend our orientation sessions later this month.”

For more information, interested persons should visit the Department of Workforce Development or visit the following weblinks to view the job descriptions and fill out an online application form:

To register for the upcoming orientation sessions visit www.gov.bm.

“The Department of Workforce Development encourages those who attend the orientation sessions to bring copies of their resumes, reference letters and to dress appropriately in business attire,” a spokesperson said.

  1. Wow says:

    What a fun job!!

  2. watching says:

I always wondered when on my vacations there were never any Bermudians working on the ships. I know there are now some on NCL and this is another good opportunity for Bermudians to work on the ships and gain both work and life experience. I credit the OBA government for exploring this with the cruise lines.

    • Hmmmmm says:

I guess history started for you on December 17th 2012. This is not the OBA’s work. The previous government put Bermudian musicians on cruise ships and similar opportunities were available also. The difference is that in this economy any old job will do and so this is all dressed like it’s new. It’s as new as the partnership with India for technical training; and brought to you by the same guy.

    • Mazumbo says:

The reason why you didn’t /or don’t see a Lot of Bermudians working on cruise ship is because the wage you get on a cruise ship is like da wages you get for being a nanny in Bermuda.

  3. Jump at it says:

To the non unionised people that got made redundant at Hamilton Princess, if you are able to travel freely, go for it.

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

Have to give the cruise lines credit for trying but how many have survived since the last efforts of getting Bermudians onboard? There was a big promotion but very few showed any interest considering the shortage of jobs that there is claimed to be.

  5. somuchless says:

I heard that out of the ones who got the jobs at ncl there are only about 2 left.

    • hmmm says:

      What was your source?

    • intheknow says:

My niece is one of them that was able to stick it out. And she absolutely loves it. So I say go for it. Lifetime opportunity-grab it!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Heard the same number remaining. Bermuda grapevine seems to work sometimes.

I would think that it was not worth the effort for the cruise line though it gave them some good PR.

Work on the ships is tough & the pay is low. How do you think that they keep cabin prices so low? They make the money on all the add ons like the casino & 30-40% commissions on shore excursions.

  6. Pure Madness!!!!! says:

Working on a ship is not as easy as some may seem to think. From working in close proximity with the ships, hearing (from ship crew)and seeing what is required to be done, for the pay it is not worth it. Mind you now, some pay is better than non at all. So good luck to those who can actually stick it out.
