Bermuda Poetry Showcased On BBC Scotland

July 29, 2014

In honour of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, currently being held in Glasgow, Scotland, poets from throughout the Commonwealth were invited by the British Broadcasting Corporation [BBC] to submit poetry in order to represent their country or territory, with Bermuda’s Kim Dismont-Robinson representing the island.

Each of the contributing poets was invited to be interviewed by the BBC; in her interview, Dr. Dismont-Robinson touched on the island’s unique history and geography, slavery and segregation, Gombey dancers, and more.

Listen to Dr. Dismont-Robinson’s interview and poetry below:

Following her interview, the Bermudian poet recited her piece,  titled, “Scents of Bermuda: Or, All De Smells That Accosted My Nose One Day When Ahs Ridin My Bike From My Momma’s House on Norf Shore To My House in Smif’s Parish.”

The poem itself focuses on the many unique smells that Bermuda emits, including the scent of rain, ocean spray, crushed lemongrass, and overripe cherries.

Works of poetry from around the Commonwealth, including Ms. Dismont-Robinson’s poem, have been made available on the BBC website, allowing members of each of the participating nations to share something of their culture and history with the world.
