Artemis Launch 2017 America’s Cup Challenge

August 20, 2014

Sweden will be represented in the 2017 America’s Cup, with Artemis Racing officially launching its challenge at an event in Sweden.

Torbjörn Törnqvist, Team Principal of Artemis Racing said: “Sailing is my passion, and I’m very proud to once again represent Sweden in the America’s Cup. Given our experience from the 34th America’s Cup, what the team went through and achieved, we have an incredibly strong culture, a belonging to the team.

“Building on our core group from the last campaign, we have been able to secure talent across all areas, and I strongly believe that Artemis Racing is a team capable of winning the 35th America’s Cup”.

Highlights from Artemis Racing’s launch event in Stockholm:

“The America’s Cup is the pinnacle of international sailing. KSSS is proud to be a challenger once again through Torbjörn Törnqvist’s Artemis Racing team,” commented Staffan Salén, KSSS Commodore

“We are also very excited by the prospect of involving Swedish sailors in various ways in the project. We want to extend our gratitude to Torbjörn Törnqvist for making this possible.”

Artemis has competed in the prestigious sailing event before, with their appearance in the 2013 America’s Cup ending in tragedy, with the death of crew member Andrew Simpson when the catamaran capsized during a training run on San Francisco Bay in May 2013.

Artemis — which owned by billionaire Torbjorn Tornqvist — is the second team to announce its challenge, following after Emirates Team New Zealand.

The venue for the 2017 America’s Cup has yet to be announced, with Bermuda along with San Diego on the organisers’ short list. Regardless of the outcome of the venue choosing process, Bermuda is already set to host an America’s Cup World Series racing event.

  1. Commodore JB of BBIRYC says:

I may decide to commission a sailing yacht for this event. The problem is that I have more money than my competitors and can spend more money on research and development so that the team I enter will win this race. If only other people had the amount of wealth that I had, it might be a fun event. Although I like winning all the time, it gets boring for the spectators.
