cup match crash 2014 (2)[Updated] The police have confirmed the tragic news that 51 year old Melvin Smith, who was in the tent that a car driver crashed into over the Cup Match holiday, has died.

The collision occurred just before 6am on Saturday morning, and saw the driver crash into two parked cars and then crash into a tent.

Mr and Mrs Smith were asleep in the tent, and both were rushed to hospital after the collision.

On Saturday morning, the police confirmed that the driver of the car — a 19 year old man — was arrested for suspicion of driving whilst impaired.

In a statement issued today, a police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service can confirm the death of 51 year old of Melvin Smith of Billy Goat Hill in Warwick who died as a result of a road traffic collision where a car went off the road along Kindley Field Road in St. George’s, colliding with unoccupied parked cars as well as the tent where Mr. and Mrs. Smith were sleeping at around 5:50am Saturday, August 2nd.

“Police are still appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone with any information to please contact PC Ian Moe 2950011. A family liaison officer has been assigned the family and an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is now underway.

“The Bermuda Police Service extends our sincere condolences to the family and the friends of the deceased. This marks the 9th Road Traffic Fatality for 2014.

“His 44 year old wife is on a General ward recovering from her injuries.”
