[Updated] With Governor George Fergusson, Shadow Minister of Community & Sports Michael Weeks, and Jim Butterfield and Spencer Butterfield of Butterfield & Vallis on hand, the North Village Community Club officially opened their Education Centre yesterday [Sept 12].

“Children who would otherwise be left to their own devices will instead find themselves in a sheltered, safe and nurturing learning environment under the guidance and influence of positive role models.

“The intent is not only to benefit the children academically but to mentor our youth so that they may one day be positive role models in our community.”

The Education Centre will also facilitate youth camps for students during the school holidays, which NVCC said will training sessions, but will also teach valuable life skills and strategies for positive social and academic development.

Butterfield & Vallis sponsored the Education Centre, and Jim Butterfield turned the ribbon cutting duties over to his son Spencer Butterfield, saying it was fitting as the Centre is about the next generation.

Speaking at the opening, the Governor said “The North Village Community Club is a committed member of our neighbouring Pembroke community. It provides some great community and sporting activities in a safe environment for children.

“The Education Centre will help the Club give local youth the necessary skills to achieve success both on and off the field. It is a good initiative – well done to all those involved.”

Update: Shadow Minister of Community & Sports Michael Weeks full speech from the opening is below.

First, I would like to thank your President Mr. Stephen Coddington not just for inviting me to be a part of this phenomenal occasion but for his commitment to our youth and the hard work that he is doing to insure that North Village grows from strength to strength.

To the Executive, Coaches and parents, it is your work, your support and your dedication that has made North Village the community and football powerhouse it is today. You recognize the importance of this club and the need to have a good balance between football and education in the lives of our young people.

To the young men and women of North Village, I encourage you to:

- Take advantage of this opportunity presented by your Club and know that North Village cares about you, not just as a good athlete, but as well-rounded individual.

- Come prepared to do your homework – recognizing that discipline in school and doing the work that is required to build upon the lessons you have learned in class is vitally important and gives you the life tools to enhance your success on the field and in life.

- Support each other; push each other to stay on the positive path hold each other accountable for your performance in the classroom, in practice and in the games themselves. This will lay a great foundation for Bermuda that will benefit our island for years to come.

And, finally, as the Vice President of Dandy Town/Western Stars – I encourage you to work as hard, practice hard and play as hard as you can, because Town is ready for you!

The question is why did it take until 2014 to do this? All sports clubs should do this, day care services is an industry, it has got to be better than deriving income from a bar. Good job NVCC.

  4. Raymond Ray says:

“Hats off” to all them that had a roll in bringing this to fruition. I commend the N.V.C.C. on the many positive things they have done over the years and obviously, continue doing. Most importantly is not to have restricted the many opportunities to them in their community and opens it’s doors to the Island as a whole
