Regiment Partially Embodied From 2pm Thurs

October 15, 2014

Due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Gonzalo — a Category 3 hurricane forecast to batter us with tropical and hurricane force winds for 27 hours – the Bermuda Regiment will be partially embodied with effect from 2.00pm on Thursday.

A statement from the Regiment said, “Individuals included in that embodiment will have already been informed but details can be found on the Regimental website www.bermudaregiment.bm.

“If you have not already been informed do not report to Warwick Camp. The remainder of the Regiment are at 2 hours Notice to Move and will be informed by whatever means available to report to Warwick Camp.”

I, like many, am happy and relieved that the men and women of the Bermuda Regiment are standing by to assist if needed, however I hope that they are not needed and can stand down as soon as possible.

Batten the hatches all and I hope that damage and injuries will be minor.

Now we finally see how all these Government depts are beneficial such as the Regiment, Works n Engineering, Sanitation, n Parks dept. I just hope OBA and Bob realizes that you can’t cut your way out of stuff. We should really consider raising the taxes on these exempt companies n the CEO wages cause that’s a good way to get rid of our national debt and that’s an increase of prob only 1%, which I’m sure these companies would hardly miss in a billion dollar company. But no! the little guy will get taxed and the wealthy will enjoy their profits.

  3. Josef says:

It’s great that they are there to help, but I think that it should be voluntary instead of mandatory.

  4. Ironic says:

While the community certainly benefits from having 100 boys on call to help after a hurricane, does that justify their forced time commitments the other 3 years of service?

I for one would not show up today if I were drafted into the regiment. I would look after my own family before helping others. This isn’t selfish, it’s a basic human instinct.

And here’s a potential replacement: offer $500 cash an hour for anyone that wants to help during and after the hurricane. Then those that are actually willing and able would be the ones helping. Believe me you’d be turning people away at the door with that price. And it would cost less than regiment. Do the math.

A few years ago there was this fella who got into major hot water because he dared to secure his own property before going off to the regiment call-up. It was just plain silly and unnecessary.

    • Bermuda Jake says:

You miss the point of the Regiment entirely. I served for 5 years giving my time and sacrificing. Now someone else’s son or daughter does the same. We share the sacrifice. Of course soldiers have families. They sacrifice alongside our Regiment so that the island can get back to safe footing. 3 years and two months part time is nothing compared to the benefit we get from living in this country.

    • Rockfish#2 says:

      “boys”?

    • CommonensenBda says:

Sadly, thanks to those drunken politicians in the PLP, there not enough money in the coffers to give locals more funds to join up! You must be one of them, to advocate giving someone $500 for one hours work!

  5. Bermuda Jake says:

Increasing taxes on wealthy people who have already left their own countries to avoid tax will lead to them leaving ours. Those companies and CEO’s already provide the majority of our GDP.

We as Bermudians must live within the means that we have. At the same time we must design new opportunities for training and support for our people. Finally we must invest in creating new industries for growth.

We have the ability to run our country. We must stick together – all of us – and bring solutions to the table. We must focus on us, not them.

  6. Takbir Karriem Sharrieff says:

Soft punks do not want mandatory conscription because they always want protection afforded by the Regiment and the other guy to do it.!They want to have the safety of a standing Embodiment of other people to protect them like a strong Police Force. These whimpering chumps will never be men or strong women in our society and thats whats Bad about it.When foreigners take their jobs and become successful they squeal like little schoolgirls. The worst storms in this Island are the tempests raging within their quivering little souls.!

  7. Mother with young kids says:

I am not happy with this mandatory embodiment. I will be left at home during this major hurricane with three young children because my husband is part of the embodiment.

  8. Kevin says:

Many of the soldiers being embodied before the storm are volunteers, I am one of them. I have a son and a fiancé and parents and siblings that I cannot be with during the storm, and I know that many of my brothers in the OSU and the IRT’s have families that need them too. But I am proud to be a part of a team that will be helping our island. Instead of having a conscription debate why don’t you pray for all of the first responders who are putting their lives on the line to protect civilians. Thank you and stay safe.

  9. Mother with young kids says:

My husband is a volunteer as well Kevin, I just think it makes sense for you to go out after the storm and be allowed to stay with your families during the hurricane.

  10. Soldier says:

If you have any type of relative in the regiment who is being embodied and by any chance you get damage to your house, call us and we will get you sorted ASAP!

  11. Rockfish#2 says:

Rumor has it that Chief of Staff Marshall and his BAD troops reported for duty yesterday.
    Can anyone confirm/deny this?

  12. WinnieDred says:

So mother the embodiment have to be before the event not after, can’t wait for people to maybe get there, they have to be there ready to move at earliest notice. it is what it is, be safe all.
