November 4, 2014

Over 50 amazing volunteers from 5 companies joined forces and took action to make a positive impact as part of The Centre on Philanthropy’s Fall 2014 Community Day on Friday, October 24th.

A spokesperson said, “Impressive results were achieved and team spirit was high as participants volunteered with non-profits that provide meals to vulnerable individuals and their families; advocate for the safety and wellbeing of children; provide care and support for our seniors; and promote and encourage interest in gymnastics activities in Bermuda.

“Along with our Volunteer.bm website which connects individuals with volunteer opportunities in Bermuda, The Centre on Philanthropy facilitates 3 Community Days each year to engage employees from our corporate members and supporters in a day of service to the community.

“Now in its 7th year, The Centre on Philanthropy’s Community Days enlist volunteers – employees, managers and executives from local companies to take part in projects in partnership with local non-profits. In this way, The Centre on Philanthropy is able to regenerate and strengthen the community by pairing teams of volunteers with meaningful non-profit projects.

“Through Community Days teams of employee volunteers channel their talent and passion working together to make a difference on the Island. Employees that are new to volunteering are often inspired to get more involved and as a result new community partnerships are formed.

“The Community Day pairings were as follows:

“A team from AXIS Capital Holdings Limited dedicated their enthusiasm and positive energy to give residents’ rooms a colourful makeover with fresh coats of paint.

“The entire team at Legal & General Reinsurance Company Limited did a fantastic job preparing more than 200 training kits in support of Saving Children and Revealing Secrets (SCARS) ‘Stewards of Children’ Training Programme.

“PwC Bermuda donated their time and vibrant energy to two local non-profits. Their incredible efforts helped to restore and beautify the grounds at Summerhaven which were devastated by the recent storms and hurricane winds.

“A second team from PwC prepared donated their time and talent to prepare 240 meals and over 10 dozen cookies with The Eliza Dolittle Society in support of families and individuals in need in our community.

“‘The timing of the volunteer activities of our staff was key in the aftermath of Fay and Gonzalo.

“The Centre on Philanthropy’s Community Days enable non-profit organisations to increase community awareness and access to volunteers by submitting a service project that can be completed in one day. The Centre on Philanthropy then recruits participation from local companies, and projects are selected based on interest expressed by their employees.

“The Centre on Philanthropy is very grateful to the employee volunteers who gave their time so generously and their companies for their support and donation of resources to make a lasting impact in the community. We especially thank our non-profit partners for their outstanding collaboration and their efforts to coordinate the projects.”

Jennifer Pitcher, Volunteer Programme Coordinator at The Centre on Philanthropy added, ‘Volunteering offers many other benefits to companies and their employees such as opportunities for leadership training, skills development, and team building.

The Centre added, “Volunteering also cultivates new relationships both internally and externally and enables employees to connect with the local community supporting employee integration and enhancing employee morale. Overall, employees are more likely to feel loyal to their company if it is known to support the community and as a result benefit from increased retention rates.’
